## Description

Goldfinch, The (DVD)Theodore “Theo” Decker (Ansel Elgort) was 13 years old when his mother was killed in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The tragedy changes the course of his life, sending him on a stirring odyssey of grief and guilt, reinvention and redemption, and even love. Through it all, he holds on to one tangible piece of hope from that terrible day...a painting of a tiny bird chained to its perch. The Goldfinch.]]>

Review: Absolutely brilliant! Keep an open mind, despite the negative reviews, and you may love it too. - I am glad I watched this movie before I read any reviews. The movie is long (two and a half hours), but I felt that the first half of the movie sets the stage for an unexpected, and exciting conclusion (I did not read the book, so it was a nice twist for me.). I very much appreciated the great performances by an amazing cast showcasing characters of great complexity. I thought the young actors excelled in their roles. The different characters' storylines were elegantly weaved into Theo's, displaying a broad variety human emotions, and moral values or lack thereof. It is a movie of contrasts, generosity and selfishness, kindness and brutality, guilt and forgiveness. Above all, it is a movie about redemption, and self-acceptance. I was deeply moved, and will watch this movie again, to further appreciate any subtleties I have missed. I highly recommend that you watch this movie with an open mind, without being biased by negative reviews. You may end up loving too.
Review: Glorious Intrigue - This movie is often glorious at times. With a bunch of the best actors in the biz, it's hard to feel anything but authenticity from the characters' emotions and performances. The actors playing the young versions of the older characters do an incredible job, and Ansel Elgort is, as usual, fantastic. I really want to read the book now. The story is interesting, dramatic and perfectly woven, with twists at just the right moments. The music and cinematography are beautiful, the writing is great, and the actors make this intriguing story come alive. This is a thought-provoking, emotional and unique movie.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good, HIGHLY NUANCED and long
*by R***E on May 28, 2020*

Please don't watch if you're tired, unless you need something to help you go to sleep. I had never read the book so my review is based on the movie alone. It's a bit of a slow burn throughout... without giving spoilers (there are other reviews on here that will give you the gist) it's a story about trauma, love and sentimental value we place on things and how sometimes the treasured goods we hide or do not display (materialistically or emotionally, etc) is a loss for the world. For me this movie was highly symbolic. From the constrained love shown through the foster family and the distance kept, Theo, the main character carries survivors guilt and shame as well as lack of centering for his center was gone (not a spoiler - his mom dies in the bombing within opening scene). It's gorgeous to watch. Anson is really great in this role as well as the rest of the cast. Except for the Stranger Things kid with the terrible Russian accent. Overall, this love and loss movie is definitely long but worth the viewing. I noticed in nearly each scene, a bird was present somewhere. But highly recommend as you do watch, let it sit and take in the quiet turmoil of Theo and his emotional journey of abandonment and freedom.
