I have a smooth black railing. Would love a color** A: Is the surface glossy? If glossy I would lightly sand then wash, prime and then at least a couple coats of paint. If it’s not glossy I would clean it well then prime and at least 2 coats of paint. I used to work in the paint department of a lumberyard and learned a lot about the importance of proper paint prep. It makes a huge difference. It may take longer but it will save you a lot of work down the road as your paint job will hold up much, much longer. **Q: wouldn't it be a HUGE time-saving help to shoppers if they had drop-down menu of colors, texture, finish?** A: If you want a better selection of paints i would just order from home depo or walmart... on amazon this stuff gets upwards of 50$ a can for no reason. **Q: Would you recommend this paint for bathroom faucets?** A: I would not recommend it. I have had trouble with it peeling and chipping off prematurely. I used it on a swing which is in an outdoor covered environment. It seems it just doesn't adhere very well. **Q: Can this be used on a rock wall outside?** A: I don’t know. I used it on metal after a prime coat. Buy 2X what you think you need b/c coverage takes a lot *by L***H on June 23, 2025* For the most part, Rust-Oleum is one of the best spray paints on the market. They are known for high quality finishes and durability. I bought the Desert Bisque color because it most closely matched the current color of my metal cafe set which came from Costco. The set is: 4 swivel rocker chairs and a square travertine mosaic topped table with metal legs. I didn’t want to drastically change the color, just refresh the paint because the pieces had quite a number of chips. I thoroughly cleaned my furniture first using a power washer and let everything sit and dry for a few days before painting. I also bought one of those trigger-style handles that snaps onto the top of the can. I HIGHLY recommend getting one if you have many, many cans to use. It will save your hand from extensive fatigue. This is an odd paint. It is a textured paint, flat finish and not shiny. The finish feels grainy, like sandpaper but it contains subtle variation within the color. The coverage is quite poor so don’t expect to drastically change the color of whatever it is you’re painting, at least without spending a fortune. I initially bought 6 cans thinking that would be more than enough to paint 4 metal chairs and the metal legs on the table (not the top). I grossly underestimated that quantity! I had to order a second 6-pack to finish the task. It took every bit of those 12 cans to cover the furniture! That was about $120! My furniture looks great but it took a couple of rounds and doing several layers to get the paint to completely cover the surface. This kind of job is not something you do in one day, at least not if you want professional looking results. I was patient and took my time because my lawn furniture is an investment I made when I purchased it and I want to do proper maintenance so it continues to last for many years. Despite this being a different sort of spray-painting experience, for me, I do love the color and the textured surface, though. It helps keep the chair cushions from sliding off the furniture. The set has been exposed to the rain a couple of times since I painted it and it still looks great. I think it’s a unique, specially paint and, ultimately, it does a good job but don’t expect instant results and to be done in one day. It’s definitely different than any spray paint I ever used.
