Yes, the device may appear to be defective in design, but only to someone who does not understand that the water flow inside the downspout is actually mostly on the inner surface. This device catches that surface flow, directing it into the threaded hose outlet, while still allowing water to pass down through it when the flow in the hose backs up. Clever design, easy to use!
Review: Best design out there! - I replaced my gutters with larger ones and the downspouts were larger also. I had this model in a 2" by 3" and it works great, but would no longer fit the new downspouts. This larger version is the same design as the smaller one but works with the larger downspouts perfectly! Plenty of water, no debris in rain barrel and a quick install due to it's simple design. Highly recommend!

**Q: How well does it survive the winter? Do you need to remove it?**
A: Mine has made it through at least 2 Winters with no problem. I live in the lower part of Michigan

**Q: can it be connected directly to a hose?**
A: Yes it can be connected to a garden hose.  The water collected is bountiful so the restriction of the garden hose isn't really a problem.  I used tubing because my collection barrel is 90 feet away.

**Q: Does this have to be connected to a diverter hose or can it flow/spill straight onto the top collector of the rain barrel below it?**
A: A hose works best, but if you have a large enough opening on top of the rain barrel it should be fine spilling right into it. This diverter usually produces just a light trickle of water, so positioning it directly above a 3 to 4 inch opening may work, although wind may create a problem for you. I used a short piece of hose I cut from from a neighbors trash pile, and it filled a 55 gallon barrel with 3 days of sporadic rainfall

**Q: is the colander removable?**
A: No, the colander is not removable.

Works great. Water flows to our 250 gallon tote till it is full. If it is raining really hard then the heavy flow passes through the downspout as normal. This is a simple great design so why the 4 stars? Well it holds up for three or four years before the plastic inside the downspout decays. This a fairly cheap item and it works so well that I bought another and will most likely buy another when this one wears out.
