    A must-have for any EMS/Fire personnel!

I was first made aware of the EMS Field Guide while in the EMT training portion of my fire academy. We had the 8th edition and we all absolutely loved it. In fact, it came into play in a few training scenarios when we had to figure out why our patient was taking certain drugs. The amount of information in this little books is incredible - it's like an EMT course in your pocket! For those who are wondering what it contains:-Airway management-Resuscitation-Medical emergencies-Peds-Neurologic-Poisons and Overdoses-Trauma-Emergency medications-Prescription drugs (an AWESOME chapter)-Abbreviations-Spell checker-Phone numbers-Spanish translations (also awesome!)-Metric conversionsThis guide is color coded, has tons of great visuals, is clean in its design and layout, and makes it simple to reference something on the fly. In fact, there are things that you didn't learn in your EMT class that you'll find in this guide. The construction is great. It's the size of a standard 3"x5" index card and bound on the top. The pages are made of what I am assuming is a thin plastic. I know that we've rinsed ours off in the fire academy when it got "stuff" on it. So it'll hold up.This will make a great addition to your toolbox, whether you're an every day EMS practitioner, a firefighter/EMT, or someone who just wants to know what's going on in the EMS world. This is $20 well spent, and it now has a permanent home in my bunker gear.

I Recommend BUT Know What You're Getting

This is a good field guide but it is not what quite what I expected. I am a new EMT and I just wanted something a more comprehensive than the little wallet cards to keep with me in case I was unsure of something in the field. This certainly is that, but it also has more of a study guide function to it and does go into ALS topics. The field guide is broken up into several sections: airway, resuscitation, medical, pediatrics, nuero, poisons, trauma, medications, drugs, abbreviations, spelling, Spanish, conversions, and a section to add your own notes. This is more like a hard copy of Google for the EMT and it is a lot of material in a very small package, which means there are a lot of abbreviations and it is fairly small and compact print. I can be confident that there will be something in here for anything I can run into in the field but I definitely think you would need to spend a little time getting familiar with where everything is, how the book is laid out, and the abbreviations they use or else you will most likely just end up fumbling through this in a stressful situation. There are some really great tables in this book like comparisons between hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia and croup versus epiglottitis. There is also some stuff in here that is pretty dumb to be honest, for instance they go over very simple BSI, if you don't know that you need to wear gloves on a call maybe you shouldn't be in the field in the first place. I would also recommend reading through this and knowing what information you don't agree with. For instance it says meningitis is not airborne and not a great risk to rescuers. I know I have brought up a lot of negatives but this is a good field guide and I will carry it on me on all my shifts, but for me I think this will be more of just studying up and going over things in my down time and writing charts.Pros:A ton of informationBroken up nicelyCovers everything that could be thrown at youUseful study guide/refresherWaterproofCons:Small, condensed print (although expected)Takes a little bit to get used to abbreviationsSome ALS material that is a waste of space (intraosseous infusions, capnography, ECG/EKG)

    Very Handy Dandy

As a new EMT, I have found this book very helpful. It is jam packed with knowledge related to both medical and trauma. It’s an awesome reference guide.
