Review: Exceeded expectations - great product - It took me awhile to get around to using this, but I finally got it done last weekend. This exceeded my expectations. Took me about 40 minutes to do both headlights on my SUV. Final results are excellent. They look brand new, bright and crystal clear. I had my doubts as I was doing it, but sure enough in the final step they buffed out clear. It has been a week since I completed it, so I can't comment on how they hold up over time, but I can't see why they wouldn't. The lenses on my SUV were half fogged up, mainly the upper half that gets exposed to the sun, so they weren't horrible from the start. But the headlight lenses are over 13 years old. The SUV has 220,000 miles on it, so I didn't feel like buying a whole new headlight housing. The housings are actually pretty cheap ($40 each if I recall), but sometimes the installation of the housing is a pain in the butt if you can't easily access every bolt. Thus, I wanted to give this a try. In this kit they give you multiple disks of the 500 and 800 grit. Then one of 3000 and one buffer pad. I only used one of the 500 and 800, which did both headlights. I wiped off the lens and pad every couple minutes to avoid build-up. I also didn't go full speed with the drill to avoid having the plastic head up (maybe half speed). I bet there's enough disks left over to do another 5 sets of headlights. So I wouldn't worry about running out. I used my electric drill at home, which didn't even use up a full charge on the battery. I took my time, mostly to be careful. The instructions say to go over the lens 6-8 times with each grit paper, but I bet I only did 4. Seemed like plenty. Also, it recommends to put masking tape around the molding surrounding the light to protect it. I put two layers and due to being sloppy I went off the lens and hit the tape. It sanded right through it and put a small scratch in the molding. After that I put a layer of duck tape on top of the masking tape. It was much more durable and didn't lead to any more scratches. It was so easy and the results so go, I'll probably go do my mother's car for her. Her car is newer than mine, yet for some reason more fogged up than my own.
Review: Better than expected. - This kit worked well. I can't speak of how long the results will last, but the process was easy and the instructions were clear. At this time, I'd highly recommend.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: How long does the restoration last? How often should this be done?**
A: If this kit does not provide UV protection, can anyone confirm if the SYLVANIA kit provides UV protection?
https://www.amazon.com/SYLVANIA-Headlight-Restoration-Headlights-Protection/dp/B00429NKWK/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=Sylvania%2BHeadlight%2BRestoration%2BKit&qid=1666807108&qu=eyJxc2MiOiIxLjI1IiwicXNhIjoiMC42MCIsInFzcCI6IjAuNTUifQ%3D%3D&s=automotive&sr=1-2&th=1

**Q: Will one kit restore two headlights?**
A: Did two GX470 headlights with some discs not used, but wish the kit had included two 3000 grit pads. Also, package of protectant was empty.

**Q: It seems most people do one light at a time. Has anyone done both lights at the same time, moving them through each grit stage together?**
A: Actually, that was exactly how I did mine. I was a little freaked out because I was afraid if this doesn't work I might just screw up both headlights at the same time. Making my vehicle unusable (at night) until I was able to fix it, but I didn't need to worry. The kit work wonderfully, although until you get to the last step and use the polish you can't really tell how things are working. Other than the fact that all of the steps seemed to be progressing just as others had said with the lights getting more hazy as you work. As I also said I only wish there were more of the rougher sand paper in the kit. My headlights are quite large (Volvo XC90) and the 3 pieces of sandpaper (per light) didn't completely do the job. If you have large headlights and if they are hazy (which if you are thinking of using one of these kits they must be) I would think about maybe getting one kit for each headlight or possibly purchase extra sandpaper on you own to start with (something like P600) then once you have the major 'crud' removed start with the kit and progress thru the stages.

**Q: Is there a cheaper alternative tape to the recommended 3M automotive Masking Tape?**
A: I used two types of tape. First, one layer of painters tape. Second, a layer of aluminum foil tape (ASIN: B000BQRBB4). I made sure the foil tape only when on areas first covered by the painters tape. Worked great, I did not sand through the tape to the paint. In one place I got close but the spot was bright blue (painters tape) so I knew to calm down.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good DIY Headlight Restoration Kit That Brings Back Clarity
*by M***S on May 6, 2026*

This headlight restoration system is a well-known DIY kit that does a solid job of removing oxidation, yellowing, and haze from cloudy headlights. It uses a step-by-step sanding and polishing process that gradually restores clarity, and when used properly, it can noticeably improve brightness and overall appearance without needing full headlight replacement. The drill-based process helps speed things up and gives consistent results when you follow the steps carefully. In real use, it tends to work best on moderately oxidized headlights and can make a big difference in visibility at night. It does require a bit of effort and patience, especially during the sanding stages, but the results are usually worth it when done correctly. Overall, it’s a reliable, cost-effective way to refresh dull headlights and extend their usable life.
