I do that with staples temporarily and then a few stitches with heavy thread. Just fold the loop portion of the strap back on itself to shorten it by a couple inches, whatever you need. The only issue (as some mentioned) is that when you walk, the brace slips down towards your foot. Thank being said, you shouldn't be walking if you need to immobilize your knee/leg.
