As can be seen in the first photo, tightening the wingnut shortens the screw, which clamps the right split piece onto the rod of the magnetic base arm. The bit on the left is a cup and "nut" combo, with a through-hole perpendicular to the screw, with a split-sleeve within. As the "nut" is pulled into the cup, the through-hole gets cross-tension, tightening onto the stud within. The split piece on my unit was very tight, which makes adjusting it on the holder rod difficult. I should be able to pry it open slightly to ease motion. The now captive stud is what holds the indicator, as shown in the second photo. I dunno? The supplied magnet has more holding force than the stress limit of the arm provided. Less than a 1/4 lbs of force could bottom out a dial indicator facing vertical. When you flip the switch to lower it you can't physically lift the magnet unless you really tried quite hard. Such force would not be applied in any circumstances while using a precision measuring tool. I use this solely to set a 12 foot bed jointer. The machine has no height indicators built in. I leave it magnetized to the machine. And read negative. Has never moved during operation of the machine in the year year and a half it's been on it. However This is an economy grade tool meant for everyday machine shop work of lab measurements. The arm adjuster is the weak link.... As it is with all kits under $100. I felt I got good value for my purchase price. If you are using this for rough abusive work you may not get the life expectancy you expect. This product is designed for finding TDC, setting blade and bit Heights and turning coplanarities in close surfaces as most dial indicators are made for. If you plan on putting 4 ft extention arms and taking measurements across long expanses... This is not for you. units like that range in the 500 dollar and up range. I you where asking about the actual weight of the magnet itself (as in if it was removed) I can tell you the entire assembly is roughly 1 pound.
