## Description

Product Description Ace. Review Ofra Haza's death on February 23, 2000, at the age of 41 deprived the world of a lovely woman, a great vocalist, and a fearless cultural advocate. Fifty Gates of Wisdom (AKA Yemenite Songs), her 1985 album of boldly reimagined traditional Yemenite songs, brought her international fame, and decades later, it retains its ability to delight and inspire. The set list consists of secular tunes plus examples of a festive devotional style called diwan, which is common to all Oriental Jewish communities and can be sung in Hebrew, Aramaic, or Arabic. Each group has specific traditions, but the Yemeni variant is especially remarkable for its poetry, much of which was written by rabbis as far back as the 17th century. Most diwan consist of three separate sections: the a cappella nashid (prelude), the shira (singing), during which celebrants bang on copper trays, empty gasoline cans, or whatever else is handy, and a postlude called the hallel, or song of praise. The unusual percussion accompaniment came into use following the destruction of the Temple, when Jews were forbidden to play conventional musical instruments, and also as a result of periodic oppression by Muslim fundamentalists. In Haza's hands, these sinuous tunes are further spiced up by drum machines and synthesizers, pumping out the hypnotic dance beats that catapulted the album onto dancefloors throughout the world. It important to remember that this recording long predated the flood of world/techno fusions that have since overwhelmed the marketplace. Transglobal Underground, Afro-Celt Sound System, and Scandinavian groups like Garmarna all owe Haza a debt of gratitude. But despite the historic electronic flourishes, it is the siren-like charm of the singer's voice that creates the most indelible impression. --Christina Roden, AllMusic.com

If you're looking for something different..this is it

If you like middle-eastern music and are tired of songs filled with sexually suggestive lyrics sung by singers with no real talent, look no further than Ofra Haza's Yemenite Songs CD. Ofra Haza, a Yemenite Jewish woman believed in the power of music to bring people together. A deeply spiritual person, her songs often centered around praise and worship, and this album is no exception. With a voice of almost perfect quality, she rightly earned the title of Queen of Israel. But her popularity went beyond Israel to include the Arab world. Its been said that her music brought down walls and built bridges. Almost 20 years after her untimely death, she remains popular with both Jews and Arabs. If you need a break from trashy, sleazy music, listen to this. You'll be glad you did. Her music proves that you don't need to understand the language to enjoy a song. I can't understand a word of these songs, but I love them anyway. Ofra Haza had something that is increasingly hard to find in singers today: true talent. So many singers today have the looks, but not the talent. But Ofra Haza had both. A woman of exceptional beauty with the voice of an angel. Listen to this album once and you'll see why she's still known as the Songbird of the Middle East.

    Multi-Colored Gem

*by J***N on Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2010*

Yemenite Songs may not be for those who wish to live safe within their own personal music preferences. That is no reason to neglect your curiosity. The compositions throughout each song are quite complex and would probably be fully admired only by those who have grown up, or are familiar, with similar music styles. But, once again, that is no reason to pass it by. Yemenite Songs is full of life. It is fresh and interesting. Percussion is an essential part of every song and creates much of the love I have for this album. Ms. Haza's voice leads and controls each song with ease. A voice that was beyond it's years. Because of the complexities of each song, it's difficult to give specific comments on each song. This is an album that I will have to listen to many times to grasp. It is beautiful and a multi-colored gem. Listen for the soaring vocal on A'Salk. Clouds break and the blue sky and sun appear when Ofra hits that note at 1 minute and 25 seconds. An overlooked and pure voice indeed.

More pleasent to listen to than the crap to which we are presently subjected.

I've always liked Eastern music and after listening to a sample on iTunes I bought it and am pleased with it. Besides, a Yemenite Jewess, how exotic can you get? I was sorry to hear about her early demise, she was a lovely woman. Since I don't understand the langauge she uses I like it for the same reason I like French female vocalists. I'm always imagening they are singing something romantic whereas it could be very mundane. Ignorance is bliss. This CD is only 40 minutes long and I often listen to it when I'm doing something else because it relaxes me.
