The tailor board/clapper is actually two items in one. The tailor board is used for pressing points, curves and crisp edges. The clapper is ideal for flattening seams, folds and tucks. Review: Great for home garment sewers - I sew my own garments, and had a tailors ham, but realized I really needed a clapper for working with difficult fabric. Figured I might as well buy a set that included the clapper. I use them both every time I sew now. It's nice to be able to press open a seam without pressing the rest of the garment, in case you stretch out a bias or create a fold you don't actually want. It was really hard pressing out a princess seam before. I put it together in under 5 minutes, with no issues, just a regular screw driver. Review: You DO need a drill to get this together, but once together it works very well - You really do need a drill to get this together. I tried to put it together with just a screwdriver, that did not work out at all. I was beginning to strip the screws. Thankfully, my neighbor was able to help me out and finished putting the last few screws in with his drill. It went together without any problems after that using the drill. The wood is quite hard, using steam doesn't seem to harm the wood in any way. The entire piece is quite versatile and can be used in multiple ways. When compared with top of the line prices, this elevates to 5 stars. I needed a replacement to first arrival for the lack of screws & instructions. Amazon had a replacement to me the very next day. Thanks Amazon. If you find yourself in a similar situation and you think it would be easier to just use zinc screws you've got in the garage, consider this item is intended to meet with great quantities of stream... ...repeatedly. Zinc screws will rust. Rust and fabric do not play nice together. The screws that come with it are chrome plated. (Stainless steel is even better, but hey...) I spent a half hour rubbing down the critical areas with some 800 grit and it smoothed up nicely. Don't be tempted to brush a finish on it... ...the wood needs to able to absorb moisture. Varnish, Polyurethane, etc. will obstruct that absorption.
