The bottom feed connector is specially designed to allow the water to be drawn from the bottom of the tank and returned in such a way that the hotter water will go into the tank and not be drawn back out. Just unplug the pumps?** A: Hello, If you insulate the lines to and from the panel the system will always be adding heat to the water heater as long as the sun is out. Losses only happen when there is poor insulation on the lines. The panels are specifically designed to minimize heat loss. Actually the point of a freeze protected system like this is to be able to operate in the winter as well. Obviously it has to be sunny for the system to operate, so if you live in a place that is mostly cloudy in the winter we suggest going with a non-freeze protected system and draining it before the first frost. The use of a food grade heat transfer fluid in the solar loop is mandated by law and assures that even if something goes wrong in the system your potable water is never contaminated.
