It is considered adultery because the first marriage, in God's eyes, is inviolable. The two have become "one flesh" until death parts them. Matthew's gospel seems to provide a single exception centering upon the Greek word "porneia'. Does Matthew really contradict Mark and Luke or does the true meaning of porneia reveal an equivalence of viewpoints? The gospels are for the world, but for several reasons it is obvious that Mark and Luke are gentile-centric whereas Matthew is written for a Jewish audience. Could this understanding bring harmony among all three positions? In Jewish culture, "betrothal was a binding commitment to marriage, to break it was considered equivalent to divorce." Unfaithfulness during this time would be seen not merely as reason to break off the engagement but as grounds for divorce. Until the twentieth century, the meaning of "porneia" was thought to be fornication, unchastity, pre-marital sex. This is to be distinguished from "moicheia", the Greek word for adultery. And the distinction is made by Jesus and the apostolic writers, as in Mt.15:19, Mk.7:21, 1Co.6:9, and He.13:4. Since then, this distinction has broken down. And what is the result? Adultery is now held to be grounds for divorce in our modern, "enlightened" Christian churches, and the floodgates opened. As recently as 1960 or thereabouts, divorce was rare and considered shameful in Christian circles. A Jewish marriage to be could be broken off if "porneia" had occurred. But otherwise, marriages endured, through thick and thin. There is an aspect of Jesus and his Word that has been de-emphasized to the point of near extinction. His mercy is exceedingly broad, but he calls us to holiness, separateness. We are called not only to not murder, but to not hate, to love even our enemies. We are called not only to faithfulness to our spouses, but to not even look at a woman in lust. And we are called to one spouse, as long as he or she lives. God hates divorce, but if this must be, there can be no remarriage, except to one's original spouse. Soft Christianity is not Christianity. "Carnal" Christians are called to put to death what is earthly in them. Col.3:5. At the beginning and ending of this book, David Pawson counsels a man and a couple, insisting that God's Word concerning these matters must be obeyed, no matter how difficult. Likewise, I am called to obedience in this matter. The overall Church has more divorces than the secular society. Google Dr leslie mcfall to see a 587 page pdf paper on Erasmus' error. Even though Pawson does a good job here, mcfall is much more convincing, though I disagree that remarried people are going to hell unless they reconcile their covenant marriage. The church needs to follow Paul's teaching to the letter, since he is the apostle to the Gentiles. 1cor 7 says that the woman is bound to her husband as long as he lives. Mark and Luke have no exceptions. God hates divorce. You can mix it any way you want. Blending families is not right. Read mcfall before you disagree with your formed opinion. The Scriptures are very plain...Remarriage after a Divorce when your original spouse is still alive is Adultery. Pastor Pawson gives Godly wisdom as he walks you through the scriptures concerning Divorce and Remarriage. He deals with the teachings of Moses, Jesus and the Apostle Paul on this subject. I have been divorced for the past 8 years. My ex-wife got remarried 4 years ago. As I sought the Lord for a wife He gave me a dream and in this dream people were in "Hell" saying, "I'm not supposed to be here." They were asking Jesus, "why am I here"? Jesus said because you have committed Adultery. Several souls in Hell responded, "I have never cheated on my spouse." Jesus said, you are correct you have never cheated on the spouse you are currently with. Then Jesus said, "You are in Hell because of your 2nd, 3rd, and 4th marriages. You married again while your original spouse was still alive and that is adultery. Adulterers cannot inherit the "Kingdom of God." Marriage is for Life! From that day forward I vowed to remain unmarried unless the Lord reconciled me and my ex-wife back together. If not I will remain single for life. This book was confirmation to everything I had learned from my own personal study of the scriptures concerning Divorce and Remarriage.
