My 1st experience was good with a Pentax DSLR. I jumped on this for my canon DSLR and was not disappointed. Worked great for my daughters graduation. I can only assume that the guide numbers are accurate, which would mean it provides a bit more light than the 580. The flash recycle rate is pretty fast, even at full power, when using rechargeable batteries. The battery life seems pretty good as well. The flash is plenty bright for general purpose - I often use it to light back drops (either white or with color gels) and it does the job just fine. It's also flexible, you can use the flash in manual or E/TTL modes and also as a master/slave for other Sigma flashes. The controls do take a bit of getting used to, but after a couple days with them it's not all that complicated.
