They are part of the ischium bone, which is one of the three components of the hip bone. This pillow/seat has been a real blessing due to the two holes in the seat to relieve pressure in that area. The pillow does squash down a bit due to weight of the body (and I'm a skinny guy) but it does not affect effectiveness. Up until now, I have tried multiple types of cushions, all flat without holes, and have found some initial relief, but after sitting usually more than an hour, the pain would set in. This was the same issue when driving my car for more than an hour at a time. And completely grueling in pain taking an airplane trip. Now, having seen this product with holes in the cushion, it made sense that it would alleviate the pressure under my sitting bones. It has! And I am thankful for that! I am writing this now having sat at my computer for over two hours and can honestly and truthfully say that I am pleased with the pain relief I have. I am not 100% pain free, probably because I shift around in my chair, to be able to sit this long without any major pain is wonderful! I have a 5-6 hour flight coming up and this will be the proof of the pudding that this seat cushion product will do what I hope it will do. The Aylio seat cushion may be more expensive than other products being sold with the same sitting bone cut-outs, but I "feel" that the relief of pain and the quality of this seat cushion is totally worth the price!
