English-born guitarist Albert Lee is world-renowned as one of the all-time great country pickers. His unique style influenced an array of famous guitarists who followed in his distinctive footsteps - including Vince Gill and Brad Paisley, among others. Lee's tenure in Emmylou Harris' Hot Band mark the accomplished English guitarist's legacy as legendary! Lee's new album, Road Runner, the follow-up to his Grammy-nominated Heartbreak Hill, embodies Lee's distinctly unmatched abilities. Road Runner includes songs by Leo Kottke, Jimmy Webb, Delbert McClinton and Richard Thompson, among others.

Another Great Album by Albert Lee
What can I say? I have them all and this one is great. For those of us who play guitar, the tones on this album are gorgeous. Great material, beautiful guitar playing, and the debut of his daughter Alexandra, who has a beautiful voice, singing the last cut, Dimming of the Day. I love Road Runner, Rock of your Love, and Dimming of the Day. They should promote Dimming of the Day as a single along with Road Runner. I'd like to see Albert get a hit on the country charts then he'd get more recognition he deserves and we'd see more of him on TV.Albert has been picking up great the pace and putting out more recently, both with Hogan's Heroes and on his own, than he did in the past and I, for one, am very happy about that.

Learned a lesson!
Pandora radio introduced me to Albert Lee's phenomenal Telecaster picking skills. I heard "Payola Blues" off this CD and decided to buy the whole disk on a whim.I was hoping that besides Payola Blues it would contain similar picking masterpieces.Swing and a miss! The other songs embed some great signature guitar work, but the tunes are just too far over the fence into "My Dog Ran Off with My Woman in My Pickup Truck" Country and Whiny Western terrain for me to follow. The fast forward button gets a workout on this CD.The lesson learned? Listen to sample cuts BEFORE you buy!

Albert Lee Road Runner
I heard one of the songs on this disc on Pandora Radio. My Dad was a musician and I knew he would enjoy this disc. It was easy to order on Amazon.com and the price was right. So was the disc. Dad loves it. Great guitar work and, it turns out, Albert Lee sings very well, too.

Irresistibly good...
If you know your country music then you'll know that Albert Lee is one of the finest country guitarists of his generation and the quality of this album will come as no surprise. But if, like me, you're not really into "country" but are intrigued by his long-standing reputation on the UK R&B scene and his stints backing Eric Clapton and Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings, then prepare yourself for a hugely pleasant surprise... for "Road Runner" will open your eyes to how good country-rock can be.Featuring layers of gorgeous slide, finger-picking & deeply "twangy" lead guitarwork, super-tight backings and excellent, understated vocals the beauty and excitement of country music - so often ruined by crass lyrics and simplistic tunes - shines through the set. Opening with a brilliant interpretation of Junior Walker's Motown classic that's so effective you could almost believe that Holland-Dozier-Holland were actually down-home Nashville boys, it rolls along like a southern steam train culminating in "Payola Blues", a breath-taking seven minute "duelling guitars" work-out that rocks from beginning to end.Country fan or not, the infectious drive, catchy tunes and outstanding musicianship of what's on offer here will irresistibly suck you into it all because, in the end, it's just so good.

Lee leans into songs
When Albert Lee cuts loose with his trademark country licks-clucky lines and spanky double-stops that are often drenched with spiraling synchronized echo-notes spill from his fretboard like sawdust blowing from a chainsaw. Several cuts on Road Runner feature Lee's blazing chops, but he generally downplays his legendary hot picking in favor of melodic solos within songs. There are moments of killer guitar playing-the tail end of "(I'm a) Road Runner" is sheer echo-sonic madness, the instrumental "Payola Blues" is packed with wall-to-wall jamming, and "Didn't Start Livin'" is a honky tonk rave-up-but the album's overall focus is less on fretwork and more on songs and Lee's vocals. He doesn't have the soulful pipes of Delbert McClinton or Travis Tritt, but he can carry a tune, and, as with Eric Johnson or Robben Ford, the serviceable singing is simply part of a package that includes fearsome picking. Pedal-steel giant Buddy Emmons adds beautiful, liquid textures throughout the album (he and Lee trade wicked eights in "Working on Love"), and Steve Fishell guests on bluesy lap steel.

Another great album from Albert Lee - a British treasure
I first saw Albert with Jon Derek's 'Country Fever' the best part of 40 years ago (he must have been about 12), and have followed his career since then, working with The Crickets, Don - and Phil, Emmylou, Clapton and so many others. He tours the UK regularly with Hogan's Heroes, so get out and see him live when he's in your area. Albert's guitar work, whether letting rip on a blistering solo or demonstrating his unique feel for a country-type ballad is absolutely unmatched. And he has a nice touch at the piano. I've always felt Albert has been much underrated as a fine, expressive vocalist, especially on such tender ballads from his earlier work as 'Hiding', 'So Sad (To Watch Good Love Go Bad) and 'Learning The Game'. On this album he is again on top form, both vocally and with the guitar wizardry you can always count on. A highlight for me on this one is a wonderful, sensitive reading of 'The Dimming Of The Day' with daughter Alexandra taking the lead and Albert harmonising. I've always loved Bonnie Raitt's version of this lovely song, but Alexandra runs her close. All told, another great album from Leominster's finest.

A Great Entertainer - Live
One of the great live performers best seen with his band in small clubs & theatres, a great entertainer. People will refer to his work with all sorts of artists the important thing is he is a guitarists guitarist capable of supporting anyone. This CD is edging more to country blues but who cares it is a great driving start.Albert is quite reasonable vocalist but I have to admit his daughter who also sings steals the show for me.

This album includes easy-rolling rockers and alternative country songs with great guitar playing. I wish it had a bit more edge in the songs, the title song is my favorite.
