You twist the orange part counter-clockwise to open the valve, then you bite on the blue nozzle and suck the water like a straw. Took me a while to figure it out. I thought you only had to bite on the blue nozzle to drink.

Q: When I tighten the chest strap, it slips and will not hold. Is there a solution for this?

Mine did the same thing. I finally figured out that the clip on the chest strap (the emergency whistle) was put on my pack backwards. Once I fixed that, it didn't slip anymore.

Q: Does it not have a cover for the mouth piece to keep it clean, when you're out in the elements?

Yes the month piece is in a covering that you have to screw open to get the water

Q: Would this fit a 9 year old boy?

Yes. It fit my 10 yr old grandson. Just be careful with the mouthpiece that it doesn't come off in his mouth and choke him.
