This is the flat plane book you want.
Buy this one and not the other Harvey Refsal. This one contains all the other content and then some.

Five Stars All The Way
I cannot say enough good about this wonderful book. The history is interesting but what I really like are the patterns in the back. So far I have done almost a dozen caricatures and really like the flat plane technique so well described. I use a scanner to resize the patterns and glue them directly to the wood block before cutting them out with a bandsaw.

I like the history behind all of it.

Learn to carve
Harley Refsal is a wonderful teacher and provides enough detail in this book to carve Norwegian characters. The characters are whimsical and easy to carve. The book contains scaled drawings of a number of "little people". Of particular interest to me was his description of how to paint the carvings and what you need to accomplish this. This book works well for the beginning carver (me) or the veteran. Highly recommended.

Perhaps I didn’t read carefully enough
Perhaps I didn’t read the product description carefully enough, but this book only offers step-by-step instructions for two projects: the dala horse and the man with his hands in the pockets. Still a good learning tool, but limited.

Interesting Book - Fast Service
This book and another one I ordered came timely and in great shape, which they should, because they are new. Recipient was pleased, and they came in great shape and in the time promised.

It's too cursory.
Fairness requires that I say it contains good information, but it is presented (though not openly) as an easy beginner's guide, which it is not. This is a book for people who are at least advanced beginners, otherwise you cannot fill the gaps between some of the cuts. I returned it because it was too simplistic to me, but paging through it I found that wouldn't have easily understood how to move from one form to the next. Here's why I say this. Carving is in the doing. Most people see these things and simply assume that they can do it because it looks for easy, which is why the book misleads. If you follow the steps and are a beginner, you will get stumped because the intermediate steps are sometimes tricky, though not really difficult once you know how to do them.

Scandiavian Style Woodcarving
Do not be put of by the "Flat -Plane Carving " methodology, this is one of the most interesting books on carving in Wood , I've ever read.Fistly it looks at in some depth ,the history of Scandinavian Wood Carving , the Author also acknowledges ,other well known wood carvers ,& has Photos of their work as well, as his own very skilful work.Lasltly he has also produced Drawings to help the reader to emulate his own style ,with easy to follow instructions. So if you think "Flat Plane Carving " sounds boringly simple , It's not it's 3D with a difference, and very refreshing ,to get a different point of view.Buy it , you will not be disappointed , worth every Penny, Dollar ,or whatever coin you need to buy it.Jimmy A.

Flat Plane Carving
An excellent book full of detailed information but, in my humble opinion, not for the absolute beginner. It covers the history of Scandinavian carving and 12 Scandinavian figure carvers, but has little or nothing about tools and/or sharpening. The book has more than 40 patterns and does cover painting techniques for the two step-by-step projects.
