Mainly I bought this long mousepad because my keyboard was sliding around on the slick surface of my desk. This solved my problem. It also is a really good mousepad in general, and it's long enough that I can fit my keyboard, mouse and even have a spot left over to set the XBOX 360 controller I use for emulators and Steam gaming.
