Armies of the Russo-Polish War 1919–21 (Men-at-Arms, 497)

Excellent Reference, Well Illustrated, but....
It contains all the maps, illustrations, and detailed info about the war left out of other histories of this war. It is not an in-depth history, but a stunningly vital supplement to such, as Osprey Book usually are. I recommend that you read Norman Davies' White Eagle, Red Star-The Polish-Soviet War 1919-20 (2nd Ed 2011), Adam Zamoyski's Warsaw 1920-Lenin's Failed Conquest Of Europe (2008), and especially Antoni Lenkiewicz's Josef Pisudski: Hero of Poland. Poland takes a bad rap on its military, but a close look shows that it one-on one fights with invading enemies, it usually won, or even when dealing with the Germans at the beginning of WWII, it fought them to a standstill. When it lost its independence in the 1790's, and September 17, 1939 (the Soviets invaded almost three weeks after the Germans), it was only because two or more enemies ganged up on it. If you're Polish buy this book, if not for yourself, then for your kids.

Very good book or rare historical war
It is about time this war in history is available for people to read about, Very few American's know about this war and todays generation does not care either way. However if you like history this book is worth buying on this rare topic of the Polish Russian war 1919-1921 . Very nice color plates and basic but not complete battles that took place. And the surprising amount of nations fighting during this war Polish , Russians , Ukrainians, etc. Even American volunteers to help Poland fight the Russians. Poland won this war against Russia and saved Europe from Communism at this time in history. There were many battles during this war and the Cavalry was a major force on both sides unlike the first world war in the West which played a very minor role . In the East the Cavalry ruled the battlefield , yes even in 1920 with excellent success in battles won. However that is the only problem with this book , It shows no Cavalrymen on horses Not Polish or Russian , so we do not get a good overall view of the uniforms . This book is just plain basics on this war topic , to be complete would require more volumes or a thick complete hardcover book. Even so I am glad Osprey made this book available and I am glad to have it in my collection.

A typically competent Osprey "cliff notes" of the topic.
A typically competent Osprey "cliff notes" for topics that Osprey has covered previously to some extent (the Bolsheviks, the Poles, the short-lived Ukrainian forces, and the even shorter lived Belorussian forces), but not in a unified way.Quibble: Bring your own map. If it's an issue, then you might consider it to be four or even three stars.

Osprey always delivers
This is a standard, first-rate Osprey product. I increased my tiny knowledge of the events by a substantial amount. As usual with Osprey, the coverage of uniforms and equipment is lavish.

Poland fights for it's life 1919
A part of the Russian Civil War that has been forgotten. The Polish nation was threatened by troops of the red army as the Leninist government of Soviet Russia tried to reclaim as much of The Russian empire as they could. The Poles put together an army based on War veterans and mercenaries. Poland fought for it's life and beat back the Reds . this is another World War One aftermath book the will be of interest to all history buffs especially as we are now in the one hundreded anniversary of the war

Great Primer
Another standard Osprey Series product. Great and detailed artwork on uniforms of the various belligerents of the period. AS with many Osprey products, uniforms and equipment are the focus of this work - though it does serve as a quick primer for students of military history who are interested in post WWI European conflicts.

A Review of an Important Book on the Russo-Polish War of 1919-1921
This is another of the books in the "Men-at-Arms" series of the Osprey Publishing Company. There are separate books in that series which deal with the Russian Civil War. I was glad to see that this entirely separate book which dealt with the entirely separate war between the new governments of Bolshevik Russia and the new country of Poland.

Yet another in the excellent Osprey contibutions to the Russian Civil War and allied conflicts.A welcome look at Uniforms, military structures ,formations and the rather dispirit participants than the lay reader might expect which adds to the rather more dense books of Stone and Zamoyski. This is what Osprey really does well and it is well written and illustrated.

A good concise reference
As expected from Osprey, this is a quite informative booklet on a little-known campaign, fought in a very confused political environment. One must congratulate the authors for their courage! Numerous period photographs, and some quality artwork.Recommended to any interested in the period.

Good quality work from Osprey on the Russo-Polish war of 1919-21.
Good quality Osprey work. Includes history, uniforms and events on the Russo-Polish war when Poland almost lost her newly found independence after 123 of occupation and division between three super-powers of the era.
