Buy it. You won't regret it...
Age 57. 5'9" tall. Female. Weight crept up to 161 over this past year but still not technically overweight. Doctors visit and I discovered I was pre-diabetic. Strong insulin dependent diabetic family history, have seen the perils first hand, and don't want to go there. I read this book and it resonated with me so I gave it a try. Just recently started and I'm losing 1.5 to 2 pounds a week and I'm NOT hungry or miserable like my usual diets. The book itself is an easy read but it took a little time to fully understand the glycemic loads and how to calculate it using white bread as the standard but once I got that it was easy to do. Plus the author provides a solid glycemic load listing in the appendix. Yes, I gave up most starches but I'm following his advice and having a half serving of starch at breakfast and again at dinner. I've stopped worrrying about the little bit of sugar I put in my tea, a piece or two of fruit, and that dark chocolate square I eat each day. Plus I feel better. Yes, it takes some planning and work but all diets require that. I feel like I have the tools here to lose another 7 pounds and hopefully the next doctor's visit will bring good news. This is a lifestyle change and I'm planning to use this as a guideline for healthy eating for the rest of my life.

Not just another IR book
After you've read quite a few books about insulin resistance and the benefits of eating low carb, you think there's nothing new to read. This book surprised me by explaining simply how the body responds to carbs and gains weight. It also have tips on reversing insulin resistance easily. I tested some tips on myself and was surprised to see how quickly I noticed changes. It REALLY works. I can't begin to tell you how I happy I am. I've also stopped taking thyroid pills and metformin. My blood pressure is down, too, and I was on three different blood pressure pills. Not anymore. The first part of the book is the educational part along with tips on how to reverse insulin resistance immediately. The second part is all about the food and recipes.Highly recommended if you have insulin resistance or even having trouble losing weight. Also, this book isn't trying to sell you any products. It's a straightforward approach to combating insulin resistance and the weight gain associated with it. I wish I had this book years ago. It would have saved me a lot of struggles.

A life-changer
My doctor told me I was pre-diabetic, and that really scared me. I decided it was time to take my weight and carb consumption seriously. I picked up this book, and it's really turned my life around! I've lost 16 lbs in two months, and want to lose another 15. I am learning a new way to eat and cook. The recipes in the back are all good. I'm not missing the breads, pastas, and sweets like I thought I would. My energy level remains fairly constant throughout the day now, instead of the sugar spikes and valleys.

I thought it was genetic.
I was interested to see that most reviewers of this book treated it as a lose-weight diet book. All the women on my mom's side of the family have bloated bellies with a double handful of fat sitting on top, and so do I. I confess, I've been trying to lose my blubbery stomach since forever (otherwise, I'm really thin) but when I had a blood test and found that I was pre-diabetic with a cholesterol reading of 235, I couldn't believe it. This book will tell you why this happens and what you can do about it in a very readable format, with great recipes in the last third of the book. I made cookies last night (with almond flour and xylitol, 8 grams of carbs in the entire half-batch, and they were great). Things don't have to be so sweet that they make your mouth pucker, there are plenty of other good tastes out there. But the health concerns were the primary reason I bought the book, the Reverse Pre-diabetes part. I've only had the book a week and I've lost four pounds, mostly around my middle, and the energy boost is incredible. Can't wait for my next appointment to see the numbers. Get this book!!

Well written and organized
Very informative book that I originally borrowed from library but ended up buying to highlight parts and keep for future reference. I have lost 20lbs so far without killing myself at a gym like I have in the past. It has shed some light on quite a few myths with diet and exercise.

Good read for my fellow cysters! :)
I was diagnosed with PCOS a couple of years ago, and although I'm not obese, I've always been a little chunky, but what gets to me are all the symptoms I have--the main ones being facial hair and thinning scalp hair. The term "thief of womanhood" couldn't be more accurate, and dealing with those things will have you desperately seeking answers. I've done my research on PCOS and realized how much insulin resistance had to do with it so that's why I purchased this book in the first place to try and give me a place to start. I sat down and read it in one sitting and loved how much it talked about PCOS. It was really nice to be able to read through this whole book and actually understand what the author was talking about. There's a few recipes I'm excited to try, and although low carb is apparently the way to go according to this book, I can't really wrap my head around cooking with lard and bacon grease lol oh well! It was a great read and I feel I have a much better understanding on what's going on in my body! I would recommend this to anyone as a good place to start!

Good explanation of why we get fat. No meal plan.
This book explains the reason why we get fat. It's well written and the author explains everything in easy-to-understand details. I didn't know much of what the doctor explained though I have read a great deal on the subject of weight gain. He explains also why some popular diets don't work. There are many delectable recipes in the book though I give only 4 stars to an otherwise 5-star book due to an obvious slip-up. Though the chapters mention a meal plan in Part III, it wasn't included! The book ends abruptly after page 184. So, those of us who need a meal plan are out of luck.

Makes sense.
Turns a confusing diagnosis of pre diabetes into a manageable plan. Educating and just good sense. My doctors surgery more or less said, 'just lose weight.' Easier said than done when you are insulin resistant and they just recommended the bog standard healthy plate diet. So happy that I read this, I am making progress in just over a month.
