Great Learning Experience
This toy is a great learning experience for the assembly of multiple pieces and manual dexterity. My 3 year old grandson is a big train fan and took to this toy instantly. I assembled the train before giving it to him to let him see the completed toy. He quickly found the screw driver and began taking the train apart, learning to turn counter-clockwise to loosen a screw. The screw driver has a torque limiting feature and clicks when the maximum force is used to avoid breaking a screw... Excellent Feature. He often asks me to disassemble the train, sharing the toy with me.There are a several design features that may initially escape the notice of your child, but I believe are part of the learning experience. The wheels are not interchangeable front to back. The front wheels have a D shaped hole to key to the front axle so that the axle turns with the wheels. This is necessary to make a cam on the front axle lift the smoke stack like a Disney cartoon. My grandson tried to put a rear wheel on the front and solved this issue without my help. The smoke stack is a two piece assembly with a key slot that is difficult for a child to recognize. Once assembled correctly the child need not take this apart in the future. The key slot enables the use of a screw to attach a cap to the smoke stack. The green links attached to the wheels are a right side and left side design and can be assembled on the wrong side. The link will hit the floor or table when the competed train is pushed on a surface. Initially, it may be difficult for the child to recognize the situation, but eventually this will teach the child to look for the correct assembly of similar looking parts.

Better for an older child
Bought this for a 3 1/2 year old who wants to take everything apart. He needed significant help putting it together, and less help getting it apart. Unfortunately, though, he still gets frustrated, and the funnel broke in half almost immediately. I cannot get it completely back together, but it still works OK. Child broke the green coupling rod connecting the wheels in less than 24 hours--it is a thin piece and somewhat fragile. It would be better for an older child who already has good fine motor skills.

Huge hit. Loves putting together and taking apart. Spends hours playing with this and the other sets he received.
