Excellent
I've tried a LOT of can openers, some as primitive as a P38 that came with Army C-rations. This is a major step above that. The only difficulty I had was getting the cans in place. Once I did, the device did the rest. The magnet is very strong. If you don't have a knife sharpener, you can use the one on the back, a nice addition. This doesn't take up a lot of space and is very effective. And as it says, this one's a bit taller than most, excellent for tall cans. The days of cranking by hand are over!

works when lined up correctly
Difficult to assemble and line up correctly for use. It does work once I can get it lined up each time. Of course I have some arthritis in my hands, so maybe that is why.

Cheap Plastic on Metal! HARD TO OPERATE
For the price, its not worth it! I would expect when Hamilton Beach has their name on something it meant "quality, modern style and easy function". I AM HERE TO TELL YOU that HAMILTON BEACH must have abandoned that ideal. THE QUALITY was awful...it is very light and I have had cans pull it over. The handle that holds the magnet and cutter I would have thought it was metal, but NO is cheap, brittle plastic. As for styling, its not much different than those of the past and its current present competition. AS FOR THE FUNCTION: ITS DIFFICULT TO GET IT TO CATCH CANS AND WHEN IT DOES IT RARELY IS ABLE TO HOLD THEM. The magnet never holds the lid automatically. When I do manage to get it to work properly I have to put the magnet on the can lid....when it automatically stops the open can gets stuck under the mechanism requiring a bit of effort to free it and then having to clean up the splash of liquid that inevitably ends up all over the counter....The magnet will sometimes hold during this process but for the most part I am retrieving a lid out the food! I can not recommend this product for GenX. We remember when Hamilton Beach meant something....but those days like our youth, is NO LONGER! Since the box has been summarily destroyed because of the assumption of what it was suppose to be I will take it to one of my local thrifts shops and reluctantly donate it! I have since gone to the Dollar General and bought me a brand new $3.85 manual can opener that does what the Hamilton Beach seems to have a hard time doing...Opens cans! DO NOT BUY

It will open a can and make a mess on your counter.
This is one item I purchased and wish I didn’t. As an electric can opener it passes. You have to learn how to get the can in the right position to open a can. Once you open the can the lid is held on by the magnet. Pull the lid away from the magnet and liquid from the inside of the can goes all over. I dropped the ball on this purchase.

Trust when they say the cutting ensemble comes off for cleaning.
Mom’s last Hamilton Beach Electric Can Opener finally had a piece break off from years of use. The magnet simply snapped off. The unit still opened cans fine but why put up with the hassle? This new one works well, as expected, but there is a slightly annoying habit of the cutting assembly popping off when pulling a can’s lid from the magnet. It’s annoying but promises to make periodic cleaning of the cutting assembly a relative breeze.

Hamilton Beach Automatic Can Opener, Electric, with Easy-Clean Detachable Cutting Lever, Knife Sharpener, Cord Storage, Brushed Stainless Steel (76700) I had manual can openers for most of my life and i tried the type of small battery powered electric openers that just clamp the can and "crawl" around the can -- but that broke within 1 year (after buying those openers 2x). I decided to buy a hefty tabletop one that is plug in this time. I will say this right up front: in my opinion, if you are able, you should just use a manual can opener. The only reason why i buy electric one is because i have folks in my house that find it difficult to clamp manual openers and twist and i'm not around to always help open cans. It is just yet another appliance you have to store and bring out or keep on countertop permanently. IF you c an help it, i recommend sticking to a manual opener. As for this Hamilton Beach opener? It is built well, and actually looks nice with the SS facia. Has a bit of heft weight to it which allows the opener to hold up a very heavy can (such as the one in my video) without tipping over. The usage is very simple: just clamp it down , and press the lever and you dont really need to hold the can while its turning. See video of full operation. There is a magnet to catch the lid after as with most electric openers as expected. Functionally it works great. I have no issues. Zero effort opener. I cannot comment on longevity yet because i've only had it for a few days. But it does look like it is built to last. It should basically last forever in my opinion. I would report back if it breaks within a year which is not acceptable. In terms of cleaning, the handle does come apart to expose the blade/cog. So if you do get the parts dirty , its easy to pull off the handle and just hand clean with a rag. That's something unique about this opener and i actually appreciate that it can be removed to aid cleaning. One last thing, it has this small "knife sharpener" on the back. It's just manual sharpener. You run your blade thru it like a fine honing stone. Nice to have but a dedicated sharpener is obviously better.

If I could give this zero stars I would. During the first time it was used it billowed grey smoke from the back of the appliance and didn't trip the fuse box, something you don't expect from a brand new item. Quality control seems to be a big problem.

I have given this four stars, because not only does it havek an American type plug, you must buy a voltage convertor. Not just an American convertor plug, like I did. It didn't quite light up like a Xmas tree, I unplugged it before it did. After it stopped smoking, I binned it. So, number two. It is well boxed, and came in perfect condition. It looks good, and works just fine. And weeks later, it still does. There is no problems opening cans anymore. A fine addition to the kitchen!
