How is this different from the Game of Thrones board game?

The second edition of the board game is a nice game, full of different dynamics. It is excellent, but it may take quite a long time to finish a game and it is fairly complex and thereby a bit daunting for the casual gamer. The board game uses beautiful cards with drawings. The drawings and events make it more book-oriented. The board game features the Wildlings, but the Daenerys and her allies are not a playable house in the original game. Lastly, the event cards add a random element. GoT: Risk is simpler than the board game. It has fewer different types of dynamic (it is first and foremost centered on conquest), but it is more volatile than the board game. You don't have ships like in the board game, but you have ports that allow you to travel easily across the board (e.g. reminiscing Stannis showing up at the Wall...). You have a simple Skirmish mode of the game (essentially fairly old school Risk) and a slightly more complex (but still easy) Dominion mode. I recommend the Dominion mode as it allows you to use Action/Maester cards and characters with special abilities unique to your house. Even the Dominion mode is fairly easy to understand and the overview cardboards are very handy. All in all, this means GoT:Risk is easier to learn and it is easier to find other players to play with (the game takes a 10 to 15 minutes explanation). It is more for the casual gamer who loves GoT. This still has the epic sweep of the show though, because each house gets a seat of power that you have to defend (e.g. Winterfell for the Starks), the maps are beautifully designed and you have the character and Maester cards. The character cards show pictures of e.g. John Snow (not drawings), which makes GoT:Risk more Show oriented.The game involves throwing dice, but their are plenty of modifiers that allow you to make strong hosts of armies (which fits thematically with the show). The game is shorter than the board game and features no Wildlings, but you can play as Dany and there is also a map of Essos to play with. Both are good games. The board game is more complex, book oriented and more for the hardcore boardgame player. The Risk version is easier, more show oriented and for casual and hardcore gamers.
