Usb headset/mic. i want to use it for my two laptops at once without having to pull out the usb & plug it into the other. will it work?

It should work. I'm using it for 1 webcam connected to 2 pc's and it works without any issues.

Splitter only has on/off (—/O) setting. How do you switch between computers?

I bought this splitter in order to use one mouse for both computers. I plug the usb end of the mouse into the cable. Then I plug one usb cable into each computer. In order to switch the mouse from one computer to the other, you have to use the off/on switch. You'll know when to switch because the mouse works on one computer just fine, but it won't work on the other one until you use the switch and turn it off or on, depending on what position it is in for the computer where the mouse is working. If you are trying to use it for something else, I can test that, but I'd have to know what that is. Hope this helps.

Can I use this switch for two led light strips? I have one white and one blue. I want to alternate.

Though I have not had the experience of doing exactly what you want to do, these are some things to consider: 1. The manufacturer only mentions it's use for computers equipments or accessories such as printers, flash drives, etc. In my case I used it to connect on camera to two separate PCs, and it work. 2. It can only access one at a time, in your case, if it works it can only light one at a time. 3. Since I don't know how many LED light the strip have, make sure you calculate the total voltage for one whole strip, keeping in mind that each USB provides 5 volts maximum. Also I'm assuming that you are using a power plug connected to the house electricity while this is intended to use a PC USB power. You may want to contact customer support of the manufacturer for that specific purpose, or if the seller has that specific use before you buy it. But besides the voltage and do think it may work, but it'll be for it wasn't intended.

I connected the computer cable to the splitter and then connected each of the leads to usb ports on each computer. Is this correct?

I used the splitter cable to connect two computers to a single printer. TheUSB end of the printer cable connected to the single end of the splitter cable and then I plugged in the two USB heads into the computers. Worked very well.
