Next was the popular Wu Chu. When Li Yuan declared himself the first emperor of Tang, he introduced the Kai-Yuan which lasted for the duration of his dynasty,The period when China was known to the Western world as the centre of civilization. The founder of the Northern Sung (A.D 960 - 1127) was Chao K'uang-yin who rose from general to emperor, while Chu Yuan-chang, the first ruler of the Ming dynasty (A.D. 1368 1644) was himself a monk. The collapse of the Ching government in 1911 marked the ultimate end of imperial rule in China.
