The book of choice for learning to incorporate herbs and healing foods into your life
I'm an herbalist and am completing a Master Herbalist program where this book is required reading. I love learning about herbs, but I can't say all herb books are a fun, interesting read. This book, however, is a page-turner! The author has a conversational style that makes the herbs so much easier to learn. I learn much better through personal stories and anecdotes than memorizing lists. It is easy to see that the author has been working with herbs for many years and has much wisdom to impart, and many, many fascinating stories to tell. And not only herbs, but medicinal foods (with recipes) and other natural remedies are given as well. The author excels at making it easy to incorporate healing herbs and foods into one's life. Too many books make herbal medicine seem hard, or are too preachy about diet and lifestyle. And if it's not made easy, the fact is, most folks won't do it. This book is the book of choice for someone new to herbal and natural healing, and offers plenty of insights for experienced herbalists as well. The only caution I would mention about this book is, that while the author gives various recipes for using herbs and foods for healing, he doesn't offer much in the way of how to prepare your own herbal medicines. In describing how to make a salve, for example, Duke admits that he's never had much luck in making salves, and then gives a really poor recipe for making one, so I can see why he hasn't had much luck! Except for teas (infusions and decoctions) and using herbs as foods, he seems to prefer buying standardized herbal remedies. So while the book excels in explaining how to use herbs for healing, you will need another reference if you want to prepare tinctures, salves, herbal pills, etc.

Print is Very Small
I bought the 1998 mass market paperback. This is a very good book with lots of interesting and valuable information, however the print is very small which makes it difficult to read.

Love it!
I love this book, the print is a bit faded at some parts though. Very easy to find what I’m looking for, if its symptom or an ingredient—it’s all listed.

Wealth of knowledge
If plants are powerfully enough to cause addiction, why is it hard for us to believe that plants can heal? This book explains how a lot of our flowers and even plants that we consider weeds have important medicinal value for a variety of common and not so common illnesses.

I absolutely love this book!!!!! <3
I had been looking for a easy to read book for common ailments and after receiving this book was pleasantly surprised to find suggestions for people suffering with emphysema (my mom suffers from it). The advice he gives is very thoughtful and he will inform you if an herb will possibly counteract with medication. He is a very intelligent man with decades of experience, to help the average layman make the right decisions for their health and vitality. He talks a great deal about the Paleo diet, in which a person would essentially cut meat out of their diet. I love animals (more than humans most of the time), and his thoughtful advice hit home. He is a wonderful man and you get a distinct sense that he *actually* cares and wants people to feel better. I wish I could make it to the East Coast and tour his beautiful property.A wonderful book for an enthusiastic layman (like me) or a professional seeking a second opinion!Outstanding!! <3

Paperback is small but readable
Seems like a pretty informative book - lots of info so I haven't read it all. The writing style is engaging too rather than just a tedious impersonal listing of recipes and remedies. I was concerned about the size of the book when I took it out of the package. The print is small but readable depending on vision issues. I have other books this size that require magnification and that really discourages from reading them.
