My Choice as a Luthier
I'm a luthier. I build acoustic guitars. I also restore historical guitars. I've not been solicited for this review. I bought the set of Schaller Grandtune tuners that I used from elsewhere. Like all of my reviews, this is an honest review.I've always used Grover open gear butterbean tuners on my guitars, and Waverly butterbean for my top of the line builds. However, that's changed. I recently bought a set of Schaller Grandtune open geared butterbeans for one of my own guitars. Wow! What a difference from the Grovers. The tolerances of the Schaller tuners are very similar to the Waverly tuners. Their buttery smooth action, enables very fine tuning. The Grover tuners were okay, although one was getting a bit sticky over the past couple of years. But, the Schaller grandtune tuners are a huge leap in quality. They're a bit heavier than Grover, equivalent to the Waverly's. With string load they stay smooth with no backlash, enabling very fine tuning. As far as appearance, the Schaller Grandtune tuners win hands down. Comparing the nickel plated Grover, Waverly, and Schaller, the Schaller have gold plating on the gear and washer. The stylized "S" on the gear, adds to the overall appearance. The Schaller Grandtune tuners win in mechanics and appearance. What more would you want?I've decided to put Schaller Grandtune open geared butterbeans on all of my builds, in lieu of the Grovers. My custom guitars demand no less.
