The best Vegan recipe book on the market for dogs.
I’ve been feeding a home prepared meal to my dogs for over 30 years. Due to meat allergies becoming issues I decided to try them on a vegetarian diet. I am vegetarian and have first hand experienced remarkable changes when I stopped eating meat. For the past four years my dogs have been vegetarian and doing great. I am often asked by clients what I feed my dogs. Many of these clients have dogs that aren’t thriving on raw meat diets, or high quality kibble. I decided to review 6 books I found on Amazon to refer my clients to. Out of 6 books this is by far my first choice. It is a wealth of information and recipes. She gives amounts each recipe provides and a chart to guide you in feeding the correct amount to your dogs. Ingredients are common things you most likely can find in your local grocery store.I do recommend when you see what your dogs like buy things like quinoa, beans, and other things in bulk to save money. Store them in glass jars you have recycled or bought for storage. If you want to feed vegan/vegetarian diets to your dogs this is a must have book and likely the only book you will need.Disclaimer- I don’t know the author and don’t benefit in anyway from writing this review.

Needed a little more
I really wanted to like this book, however the very first thing I went to make were the sweet potato chew strips. My dog LOVES these, and we usually order them online, but they are so expensive. I was excited to make our own at home and cut down on costs.Since I don’t have a dehydrator, I planned to use the oven. I was very upset when the only directions were “bake 1-2 hours.” I am not a professional oven dehydrator, so I would not happen to know what temperature to cook these at for dehydrating purposes unless someone told me. How could you possibly leave out the oven temperature on the instructions for how to bake these? I was very upset by this, as I already had the sweet potatoes and in do mode. Also, this book is lacking the overall health information that would make this more of a complete guide w recipes that I was hoping for. I’d like complete nutritional needs, breakdown of necessary vitamins and minerals, etc., as well as supplement information. Basically, I was looking for an entire overview of feeding your dog vegan and making sure all the necessary nutrients are met information, as well as recipes.Beautiful pictures, nice recipes.

omnivores not vegans
I am a raw vegan and love Mimi's books for humans. This one is very well written with some great recipes and ideas but I am concerned that if people don't follow the recommendations for supplementing their dogs will have serious issues - some of which take years to appear. Dogs are omnivores but not vegans, I understand alot do well as vegetarians but I would be cautious re veganism. I can see following this book and adding some meat/fish etc to the recipes to make it safe. Dogs require taurine/l-carnitine and other amino acids in meats without which they can develop serious issues eventually. Personally I don't want to add synthetic supplements to my dog's diet vs giving them in their natural form. Yes its alot better than the crap kibble some poor dogs have to eat but there are alot of us who make fresh food with organic grains/seeds/veggies for our dogs that include some animal products and our dogs are thriving. The reference to the dog Bramble that lived such a long life (strangely every time I see a reference to this dog it is claimed he lived longer lol) but apparently the owner hasn't had any other dogs live as long as Bramble so we don't know that a vegan diet was responsible. So the book is certainly full of great info and ideas but people need to make sure they get the supplements if they are going to follow it but personally I would be sure and add the food that a dog's system was created to eat and particularly be aware that an alkaline diet is great for humans but not for canines as it can cause bladder stones (which is why the addition of cranberries is mentioned in the book).

What is a mug measurement?
Very first recipe uses a "mug" as a measurement. I understand the recipe is from the UK but I could not find anything googling that it is any kind of standard measurement there. As far as I could tell from the internet a "mug" measurement could be anywhere from 4 oz to 16oz that's a big difference. It's all relative I suppose but then they have teaspoon measurements in there too. It's very frustrating the first recipe calls for vague measurements. If anyone could answer what exactly they meant by mug measurement I'd greatly appreciate it.

Be careful
I have been using this book to make food for my golden retriever for the last 3 years. She loved the food but now has heart failure that the vet tells me is from her diet.

Informative &Fascinating with Super Recipes
I have all of Mimi’s books & particularly find her Ultimate Guide to Modern Juicing, to be the definitive guide on what juice to help with what health issue or requirement, and her book Raw-Vitalize: The Easy 21-day raw recharge to be excellent, with super recipes and loads of helpful info. The latter book was written in collaboration with one of her daughters, and this is the case with this latest new excellent book on plant-based dog foods, as another of her daughters, Lisa, is a canine herbalist & has written the book with Mimi. This book is well thought through. There are interviews with top specialists in the field of canine health and nutrition and much advice on what is important in the diet of dogs & helpfully what foods are poisonous to dogs. There are also tales (tails!!) from dog owners who have fed their dog’s vegan food for years. In particular, after reading a section about Bramble, I purchased the book, Bramble; The Dog Who Wanted To Live Forever, having read about this remarkable collie that became the longest-lived bitch at 25 years old, fed exclusively on a vegan diet. There are super dusts and nutritional supplement powders to make to add a tiny bit to your dog’s meals (amounts dependant on the size of dog), see my picture of some of the ones I have made, my dog loves these. I dehydrated curly kale and made kale dust too (not shown) & my dogs best new treat is the recipe for dehydrated sweet potato chews, he goes mad for these. Whether you decide to go all out plant-based for your dog or just add in some meals per week which are not meat based, this book has all the answers to your questions or indeed worries about feeding dogs a vegan diet, laid down in a friendly and easy manner. I highly recommend.

Love this book
Love this book. My dog has transferred to a plant based diet and he is thriving. Cooking for him is easy with this book. So many great meals which he loves, and which are all brilliant for freezing so I can do a lot of batch cooking!

Probably good but..
I received this book yesterday and at first glance it looks good with lots of recipes to try out but I was disappointed to see garlic on the toxic list. If you google the basis of why garlic is banned, the research is flawed and there is sufficient evidence that small amounts of garlic is very good for dog’s. It just makes me doubt the rest of the book which is a shame as I think there is a lot of good stuff in it.

No credentials to write about nutrition
I worry about the author not having any credentials to write about plant based nutrition for dogs. Garlic is good for dogs but she states it’s toxic. There is also a lot of type, ideas and format that seems to be copied from another well known recipe book for vegan dogs! Not cool to do that.Returned for refund.
