Atomic Blonde is a spy thriller starring Charlize Theron and James McAvoy. The movie is set in Berlin, in 1989 on the eve of the fall of the Berlin Wall, when every spy in the city is at risk of being when an MI6 agent is killed by a KGB agent and a list of every agent operating in the city is stolen. Theron plays Lorraine Broughton, a high-ranking MI6 field agent, and McAvoy plays MI6's Berlin station chief. The plot of the movie is about agents from various spy agencies, including MI6, the CIA, KGB, and the French intelligence service trying to track down the list, but that is mainly filler between the fight scenes. The movie is based on a graphic novel and the violence is definitely very over-the-top as it tends to be in many of the film adaptations of graphic novels. There is also some sexual content, including a sex scene between Theron and Sofia Boutella.For those who get the 4k set, as usual, you get a UHD disc and a regular blu-ray disc. The A/V quality of the 4k disc is very good, although neither is what real A/V wonks would call reference quality. The only extra on the UHD disc is a commentary track on the movie by the director and the editor. The rest of the bonus content is on the regular blu-ray, and those include deleted and extended scenes totaling about seven minutes, a handful of making-of featurettes that total about twenty-two minutes with the shortest being about four minutes and the longest being just under eight minutes. Then there is a short storyboard sequence for a couple of the action scenes.The movie is a good action spy thriller. The movie is definitely not appropriate for young kids as it has a lot of violence, swearing, and sexual content. But, if you are in the mood for a good action movie that you do not have to pay constant attention to in order to follow what is going on, this is a good one.

I don't remember what studio bought and decided to run with this script, this story, but it is absolutely a killer Movie and a Killer plot...I'd give it 6 Stars if possible. Oh and the Sound Track of this Movie is Killer. Bravo. Bravo. Bravo !!!

I was 28 yo when the wall came down. I liked that the wall falling was the backdrop. I have kept up with politics since the 9th grade of high school. It's a movie, so okay, it has a few plot holes.Every movie has a plot hole or something that simply does not make sense in the grand scheme of things. Trying to say the cold war made The List pert near obsolete is just people who expect movies to be perfect. Movies are for escape and whether made in Hollywood or Bollywood doesn't change the fact that sensationalism will be in effect!And, of course, it's not John Wick. I could pick those movies apart, too, but if, overall, the action is good, the plot is good, the acting and writing are good, and remember I said overall, then wth does this movie have to do with John Wick movies? Do some people really think spy/assassin movies were not around before John Wick? I cheered like a fool while watching the Wick movies. And I cheered like a fool for this movie. I enjoyed it and loved the backdrop of people pushing against the politics of the time, people wanting to be FREE & being welcome to the other side...well, damn it, was just icing on the cake.Go watch it. It's a good ol' fashioned spy action movie!

Really well-done period piece action/spy thriller, set in Berlin, Germany on the eve of the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989. Despite the fall of the Berlin Wall being days away in the film, it is very much a Cold War thriller (based on the graphic novel _The Coldest City_ by Antony Johnston). The film centers on British spy Lorraine Broughton (played by Charlize Theron) who is sent to Berlin to try and recover The List, which names every single intelligence agent active in Berlin no matter what government they work for. Incredibly dangerous to many people if it got out, she is sent to Berlin not only get The List but to try and uncover the identity of Satchel, a double agent working for the KGB who has been a huge problem for MI6 for years.Right away though upon getting to Berlin Lorraine is “made” and is ambushed by KGB agents. Saved by MI6 station head David Percival (played by James McAvoy), Lorraine is thrust deep into a complicate web of intrigue, backstabbing, double crosses, hidden agendas, numerous attempts on her life, all while trying to uncover the identity of Satchel and get The List. Part detective, part spy, part action hero, Lorraine has her work more than cut out for her.I liked the film a lot. There are lots of almost John Wick level action sequences though they stop just short of being quite so superhuman (Lorraine is clearly mortal and does very much get hurt in the film). Fights are quick, brutal, ugly, combatants use absolutely anything and everything they have at hand, but thankfully the filmmakers refrained from Jason Bourne style cinema verité.I liked the cool, dangerous, calculating way Charlize Theron played Lorraine. Some excellent acting, she perfectly portrayed a character with quiet competence, a cool demeanor, enormously intelligent, but not superhumanly so (she makes mistakes, is fooled, and not every fight goes completely the way she wants).Though a Cold War thriller, it is less watching dead drops and doing surveillance and more brutal fights behind the scenes, be they hand to hand, gunfights, or with cars. Though bloody and violent, the fights seemed well grounded and as far as I could tell no laws of physics were broken.There were some plot elements that could be a little convoluted but that wasn’t surprising in a film where double-crosses and double agents were part of the story. All in all a very well done film that also makes excellent use of a number of great rock hits from the 1980s, both helping with the period piece feel but often also fitting what was going on in a given scene.

Charlize Theron, not content with being an Oscar winning actress and stunningly beautiful, she shows everyone that she can kick *ss also. What I especially liked about the fight scenes in this movie was that there was no ridiculous quick moving camera angles that didn't allow you to really see what was going on in the fight scenes. The cameras were set up off to the side giving the viewer a perfect view of what Charlize was doing while she was kicking the cr*p out of everyone. It was also very clear that Theron had put in some hard months of training for these fight scenes and she REALLY pulled them off. Needless to say her acting was superb.Yes, this movie is in 4K, but more importantly it is shot in Dolby Vision which in my opinion is the best 4K format for movies. For anyone who doesn't know, there are 4 currently in use 4 K formats : Dolby Vision, HLG, HDR10+, HDR10. Both my tv and dvd player are from the same manufacturer, LG and therefore both support Dolby Vision. They also share a special connection as do other manufacturers when you buy both the player and tv from the same manufacturer, which means that it will add more perfection to the picture quality. In this movie the picture quality is very sharp, clear and almost 3D like in its sense of depth and reality. It gives you the feeling that you can reach into the screen and touch the characters. It almost makes you feel like a voyeur because you feel you are there with the characters.The sound is dts X, dts Digital Surround and Dolby Audio which is not to be confused with Dolby Atmos. This movie does not have Dolby Atmos sound, which I think is too bad, but the sound is very full and rich.Watch the Bonus section. It has some good behind the scenes action.We need more "CHICK FLICKS" like this !
