Little gem!
Have to say I'm probably like some who are new to this type of shaving as they are fed up paying silly money for a set of cartridge blade from a well known company. Anyway, so glad I've got this little gem. So the cost of setting myself up was as follows:Edwin Jagger Imitation Ebony Double Edge Safety Razor With Pack Of 5 Blades De86bl£20.58Set of 50 mixed blades£2.91TAYLOR OF OLD BOND STREET STYPTIC PENCIL- STOPS BLEEDING & SHAVING NICKS (alum block is better)£1.95NATURAL ALUM BLOCK CYLINDER (120gm) STOP BLEEDING£5.55Palm Olive Shave Stick.45pWilkinsons shaving brush£2.50Total £33.94It may seem quite a bit of money, but start up costs normally are.I have enough blades to last maybe 2 years!! (if I changed my blade every 2 weeks). At the cost of less than 1/3 of a set of cartridges. Imagine doing that with cartridges.I find 1 blade better than 5 too. 5 blades seemed to get blocked up easily also they work on a tug and cut method which can create more ingrowing hairs. With one blade it just cuts the hair at the base.I found that if I hadn't shaved for 4/5 days 5 blades would pull a lot. Whereas now it's like a knife through soft butter every time. I find I get a much better/closer shave too using the 3 pass method. Check out youtube lots of useful tips. This method of shaving takes a little practice but after a short while you'll get use to it and it is actually quite enjoyable. So bearing in mind that you only need to change the blades which can work out at about 6p each its a bit of a no brainer. Plus Edwin Jagger DE razor suits me fine it looks and feels great (found really easy to use) and should not need replacing.5 blades for 2 years cost £156 (change once every 2 weeks)DE blades for 2 years cost £3 (change once every 2 weeks)simples

Nick free shaving
As with many others here I'm a recent convert from the disposable blade systems available from Gillette etc...... My first shaving lesson as a teenager was with my fathers guidance using his old school Gillette double edge razor so it seems strange that at the age of 49 I have gone back to this method of shaving but thought I would give it a try and started off with the cheaper Gillette safety razor which for around £6 is not a bad buy to get you started, not sure if it was the razor or the Gillette blades but found I frequently nicked certain areas usually just under my nose or beneath my bottom lip....When this Edwin Jagger razor arrived earlier today I was impressed with the posh looking box and finding the razor well wrapped up inside in tissue paper instilled a feeling that this was a quality product, the razor has a nice finish and feels a nice weight in the hand. I found blade changing more fiddly than the cheaper Gillette safety razor that I'd previously used and the blades seem to protrude outside of the head sides which I don't really like and had the head been a couple of millimetres wider would have covered this and looked much nicer, the other criticism for me is the handle length, if it was another inch longer then it would be prefect as I can see this is going to annoy me over time but hopefully I will learn to live with it.For my first shave I did the usual hot flannel over my face, followed by a good lathering of soap which I'm now starting to get the knack of creating a good lather, upon putting the razor to my face I was impressed with how smooth the razor was against my skin, no drag whatsoever and it felt almost impossible to nick yourself despite being a little less cautious than with my previous razor, to nick yourself with this setup I would imagine one would need to be quite clumsy or careless as it feels a safe razor to use.The supplied Derby blades are good to try, have no idea how they compare to the Gillette blades I had been using up until now, but I intend experimenting till I find a favourite... I have some Feather blades which I thought I would try on the next blade change as I understand this are the sharpest you can buy, and I was always taught that only a dull blade is a dangerous blade so hoping this is indeed true.Would I recommend this razor? Definitely, but if I could improve it in anyway it would have a longer handle and a slightly wider head so the blade sides are not exposed, it may be that I will upgrade to another razor with the longer handle but I wouldn't hesitate to ensure it's an Edwin Jagger as it's great quality without breaking the bank and its nice to support a British company these days.

Nice bit of kit
Looks smart, works well, good value. What more do you need? Just use good blades!

Broke the first time I used it.
Very disappointed. The first time I used it the head fell off. I’d assumed the handle was either a single solid piece or else a solid bar between the chrome ferrule on the end and the threaded end that the head screws into but it’s actually just a plastic tube. I can’t believe it’s meant to be an interference fit and that it’s supposed to be bonded in and a manufacturing defect stopped this from happening.Returned for a refund.
