A beautiful follow on in the series of the White Giraffe
A beautiful follow on in the series of the White Giraffe, following the adventures of Martine and Ben in Africa, I really enjoyed this book. Having read a lot of the author's books as a younger reader, it was refreshing to go back to a genre of story that I had neglected since going to secondary school.Martine is thrown back into a world of adventure on her grandmother's nature reserve when poachers become interested in a group of rhinos that have recently been moved to the sanctuary. They have a popular band come to visit them and to see the other safari animals. Martine's celebrity crush leaks information on the rhinos' whereabouts on Twitter, after being told my Martine. When a rhino's horn is taken later that night, Martine feels responsible. She also thinks that she has lost the ability to heal the animals that she loves. Martine is visited ina Dream by the injured rhino, who begs her to look after her calf, Jabu. Martine and Ben visit a rhino sanctuary to help Jabu settle in but end up discovering a huge secret and solving the mystery of who had been poaching the rhino horns.I found this book incredibly enjoyable to read: it had the perfect mix of adventure, excitement, mystery and animal action. It also enlightened me to the terrible truth about poaching that effects so many animals, in this fictional layout. The plot was gripping and perfectly balanced - neither travelling too quickly or slowly. Whilst it didn't throw hints and clues at me about who the poacher was, it did provide the effect of me solving the mystery with Martine as I read. I was therefore gripped in the adventure. As I didn't know much about the plight of African animals, the whole series raised important points about why animals should be saved and enlightened me to a lot of beauty within the safari. The descriptions of the rhinos described the beauty of them and the care that they have for each other; it showed how underneath their formidable appearance they are fiercely protective yet gentle creatures.I would definitely recommend this book to those with a passion for saving and looking after animals and those who don't know anything about them, as it is informative without being overly simple or too complicated. Despite the fact that it is aimed at a slightly younger audience than myself, I think that readers of all ages would enjoy this book and find the whole series an interesting read. Another hugely successful book in the series!reviewed by Prospera Dukes Ross, Year 8

Operation Rhino
Operation Rhino is the latest exciting episode in challenging life of Martine, the young heroine. The magical sights, smells and sounds of the South African bush are all around as Martine, her friend Ben, and Jemmy the white giraffe do battle with the evil poachers intent on wanton destruction for profit. The friends have to turn detective, and cope with all sorts of threats and dangers along the way. My sons have read all the other stories in the series, and tried to pinch Operation Rhino when it came through the letter box and before I’d read it. No chance.

... new characters for fans of the series and a great plot. The choice of words makes this book ...
This book is a thrilling tale set in the African wilderness with many exciting new characters for fans of the series and a great plot. The choice of words makes this book readable for all ages of children. I could not drop the book, especially as the gripping mysteries unwind. The plot is full of curiousity, mystery and loyalty and once again Martine is living with her grandmother in South Africa. This book will be a great success with the kids. A delightful read...Chijioke Ifeanyi-Dibie, Year 6, Plumcroft Primary school, London

Luaren's BEST book yet!!!
As soon as I had finished the first chapter I couldn't put the book down. Lauren St John has taken me on a thrilling adventure where fabulous characters Martine and Ben go on a nail-biting adventure to save a baby Rhino. I truly enjoyed it and Lauren (as always) has written it so well that the words seemed to pop out of the page. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who loves mysteries, animals or simply is in need of a good adventure book! If you have already read the previous books in the series then I am sure you will agree with me that this is Lauren's BEST yet!I hope that if you read it you will enjoy it as much as I have!Mia D'SouzaAged 10P.S. Lauren, I can't wait for the next one in the series!!!
