Bryan Singer directs and co-writes this big screen adaptation of the long-running Marvel comic strip. Mutants Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and Magneto (Ian McKellen) are former friends, but look set to become mortal enemies when fascistic US senator Robert Frank Kelly (Bruce Davison) calls for the registration of all humans with abnormal powers. While telepath Xavier, who runs an altruistic academy for superhumans, wishes to enlighten non-mutants and break down the prejudices which divide them, Magneto believes that the only solution is for the mutants to take over. Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), an aggressive loner with an adamantium skeleton and the ability to heal his body of any wound, and teenager Rogue (Anna Paquin), who can absorb the life force of others simply by touching them, are selected by Xavier to join his academy, but it isn't long before Magneto's followers are attempting to capture them so that they can assist in his plan for world domination.

Is Hugh Jackman actually Wolverine?
I ask "Is Hugh Jackman actually Wolverine", because he does look astonishingly similar in this to what he does today. On the movie itself, it is a tightly plotted and fast paced adventure-superhero movie. I'll admit most movies these days I have a problem with my attention wandering in the third act, but this kept me gripped all the way to the end. It filled an evening beautifully, when the credits rolled (sadly no post credit sequences when it was made), I looked at the clock again and realised the hour and a half-ish had simply flown by. That is a good sign of a good movie. And if you've only watched the X-Men First Class and X Men Days of Future Past movies, it feels like the third movie of a trilogy with them too, completing a story arc that could have began in them. It fits with its sequels and prequels, while still telling its own story. This was a top movie. 5 out of 5 Stars.

Wish I’d watched it years ago !!
Really enjoyed this and didn’t expect to. To tell you the truth I’m a huge marvel fan but not Xmen and my 15 year old son wanted to watch it. Well soon changed my mind and can’t wait to watch the others. Hugh Jackman didn’t disappoint !!

Review of 4k Disc
Receiving a new 4k scan, the original X-Men film looks resplendent on the format. There's no Dolby Vision, but HDR10 does a decent job of improving the image over the old blu-ray. Unfortunately extras are rather thin, due to the omission of the bonus disc from the old set. A shame, but still a great transfer.
