Shaman'S Toolkit: Ancient Tools for Shaping the Life and World You Want to Live in

Not her best
I heard Sandra Ingerman speak a couple of times and found her talks to be fascinating. Those talks led me to her book "Awakening to the Spirit World" which I found to be very interesting and entertaining. I also liked "Shaman Journeying--a Beginner's Guide" as a general overview of shamanic practices.I have to admit though that I do have some of the same reservations and possibly low-level skepticism for many shaman stories that I had when I read Carlos Castaneda's books. I liked them but I could not buy it all. So, though I read books in this area and am interested in the "susto"/soul retrival stories of the shamans of Peru and Navajo medicine men, there are many books in this genre that are tough for me to accept and that just don't feel right."The Shaman Toolkit" is one of those that fails to get by my skeptical self. When I read it, it just sounds like a poorly written self-help book. Many of the recommendations seem like they could have been lifted out of any pop psychology/new age, "think it so and it will happen" book. For example from this book: (1) "Automatic writing is a powerful way to find out what is hidden in your subconscious"; (2) "Finding your heart's desire"; (3) "Avoiding negative statements"; (4) "Aligning our thinking to create a positive future"; (5) "Observe how much love went into the creation of life"; (6) "It is time to embrace the principle of abundance and equality for all"; (7) "Sending up your wishes in a balloon"; (8) "Start your day with gratitude"; (9) "Replacing sabotaging thoughts with hopeful ones"; (10) "Come up with your own power statements"; (11) "Forgiveness is the key"; (12) "We are caretakers of the earth."These don't sound like shamanic insights to me and without the "Shaman" term in the title and sprinkled throughout the text, I would not know that this wasn't a positive thinking book from the 1950's or a hootenanny tune from the '60s.I really like Sandra Ingerman's stuff when it stays close to shamanic traditions and mythologies. This book wandered too far from those things and got lost in self-help platitudes.

This is a basic or beginner book. There are a few pearls of wisdom for the more experienced but if you have already studied shamanism I recommend a more advanced book.

Meditations as a tool?!
Good but not outstanding. Focus is more on meditative practices rather than what may be considered physical tools in a shaman's toolkit. Emphasizes how to breakdown barriers to spiritual awareness. Provides the basics for the author's particular form of shamanistic practice and could be an addition to a library on the subject but certainly not a mandatory read.

Another set of insights from Sandra
This book organizes a set of tools into a simple read. The content - like most spiritual books - may appear to overlap information you already know. Sandra explains concepts in a way that allows you to listen and determine how you want to wokr with the information for your own growth and development.

A Toolkit is What You Get
I enjoyed the level of explanation concerning the practice of each ritual/ activity. It was readable and was written from a heart of healing, ah in came through in all her words. I would recommend this book for those curious about practicing western Shamanism, and for those who wish to deepen their own spiritual tradition.

Good exercises!
Sandra Ingerman gives some excellent exercises and ideas for transformational practices. A kinder, gentler approach to making positive personal change, one action at a time.

A Practical and Inspiriing Book
A practical guideline for healing the earth and changing our world. I am passionate about the concepts in this book. I firmly believe if everyone who reads this book actively practices the concepts/exercises in this book we could heal the earth and change our world!

Not an appropriate title
The Shaman's Toolkit is a self help book, employing a set of well known, very standard western techniques involving some basic visualisations and writing exercises, with a vague shamanic twist. You can find these same techniques in any number of books on pyschotherapy or hypnotherapy. It is based around the notion that you are your thoughts, with the additional recognition that this in turn effects everyone else too, and somehow contributes towards pollution. The methods employed are also very similar to those popularised by life coaches and various branches of new age self help. There is nothing new here, nor anything particularly shamanic, although there are some basic ceremonial practices such as visualising fire. On the basis of the title I was expecting to read about techniques derived specifically from shamanic practice, drumming techniques, journey styles, something i had not imagined for myself, or read about before. Instead, the shamanic aspect really comes from those areas of the book concerned with global consciousness and the vaguely set out notion that positive vibrations/energy can change the world through the collective consciousness of human beings.I think the intentions behind this book are excellent, and a lot of work has gone into it, so if you are looking for a generalised light and easy to follow self help book, with a nod towards shamanic practice, then this is ideal. It would help you tidy your thoughts up if you are stuck in a rut and have not used any visualisation techniques before, for example. I like Sandra Ingermans work, and have enjoyed a number of her other books, so I was a bit suprised by this one. It left me feeling that when push came to shove there were only really westernised modern techniques to work with. However, I also feel obliged to say that some how the shamanic twist has watered down some of the techniques, when journeying itself is so powerful. I feel bad about writing this review, and as Sandra would say, I don't want my negative thoughts about this book 'to go out into the universe'. However, I now have the hastle of returning it, because if I had realised what it actually was I would not have bought it in the first place.
