Hip Hop Family Tree 1975-1983 Gift Box Set (HIP HOP FAMILY TREE GN BOX SET)

Eye Opening for a Hip-Hip N00b
Before reading this box set, I wasn't a big fan of hip-hop (with the exception of Ozomatli) As a child of the 80s, I never really got the back story of how hip hop became a thing. I kept hearing at the time that 'it was a fad' and 'it will never last'. Later, when I got Blondie's greatest hits in college, I thought "Rapture" was a poorly done rap that was ripping off hip-hop culture. This book book goes into detail about *why* all the calls of 'it's a fad' were made in the 80s, and the fact that Blondie was a friend of Fab Five Freddy, and did that song as a tribute. And, how it helped him and other artists. If you are as ignorant of Hip-Hop culture as I was (and still mostly am), this book is best read near a computer or smart phone, so you can You Tube the artists' songs as you go, as well as learn more about the techniques (Merry-go-round, scratching, needle dropping, and various instruments, like the TR-808). Then go buy their albums.Incredible work. The first two volumes compiled in this gift box set should be required reading in high school Social Studies classes on American culture.

Piskor! It Takes One to Make a Thang Go Right
This is the most inspiring comic I have read in years. When you see the comparisons to luminaries like Robert Crumb, don't flinch; they are real. The book transcends hip hop. This is a love letter to comics, with weathered pages and a layout like a classic Marvel Treasury edition. On top of it, I am getting a better hip hop education - on how the form develops through the cross-section of major players from Rick Rubin to Russell Simmons and Dr. Dre than any documentary would give me. Godspeed.

Great content and presentation, but slightly damaged.
This has really really great content, and the presentation is great. Its printed on this really nice, thick, recycled looking brown paper. It's actually a Christmas present though and the only reason I looked inside was because when it arrived the plastic protector was shredded so I ended up taking it off anyway. The box cover was also slightly damaged/bent, which is disappointing. 5 stars on the quality of the work and presentation though.

AMAZING PACKAGING!!!
Wow! Wow! Wow! I am SO impressed with this product. First of all, this isn't your average comic book that's thin and 6 1/2" x 10". These comic books are THICK! Like thin reference books and they are 9"x13". Perfect for a coffee table or nice shelving. Either way, these books are MEANT to be DISPLAYED!!! Very nice! Comes with a bonus book. Great Product, Great Packaging and $37 is a steal! HIGHLY Recommend!

One of the greatest comics ever created
And ya don't stop. Look at some of the reviews around the internet for some more information... but you should know that this is one of the best comics I have ever read, in every way -- draughtsmanship, design, color, content, and well-researched accuracy. If you like good comics, or hip hop, or beautiful art, or business history -- GET and enjoy this box set!

Great Quality in and Out!
Wasn’t sure about this but gave it a go. Arrived on time and the quality is awesome. Thick paper and cover of the gift box gives it that extra reinforcement it will need over the years. Definite recommend

Espetacular

Fantastic comics! Highly recommend any hip hop fans check these out, they have a great discography at the back that gives the name and artists for all songs mentioned in the comics. A great way to expand your music list.

Hip hop history at its most accessible.
A really cool look at the origins of hip hop. Beautiful book and slipcase. If you love hip hop or just oral histories of culture, get this.
