If Colin wrote it.. buy it and read it.. there's more to it than a "thriller"
His enthusiasm, style, and open mindedness means whatever Colin wrote is worth reading.. . Those of us who knew him miss him still. "This is my third copy.... I read the others so much they fell apart.

It's all in the mind...
I read this novel many years ago, and was profoundly affected by its tale of the attempts of humanity to fulfil its potential, initially thwarted by... but I won't include too many spoilers. This, as the introduction says, is not one of character but of ideas. The ideas are trenchant and powerful; the characters are by and large men of science and almost interchangeable - there is no differentiation in their speech patterns or views. Women are more-or-less ignored or entirely incidental to the plot - when the protagonist's best friend dies, and he goes to the house, he talks to the man's (male) secretary, and doesn't even bother to meet and console the recently widowed woman. The history of art, music and literature that Wilson uses to illustrate the existence of the enemies within again ignores any role that women played in past events.Despite this being a tale set in the future (written in 1967, it's largely set in the late twentieth century), the style of writing is curiously old-fashioned - written, I think, in Colin Wilson's deliberately dry, intellectual prose. This actually enhances the story, making it more believable and resonant. Of course the premise is ludicrous, and I now see several plot holes that I'd missed when I first read it in my late teens. At that time, I was seduced by the concepts and actually thought that we could reach far dizzier heights than we have so far achieved. Now, after Brexit and Trump, I think Wilson - and I - may have overestimated our potential...
