A Much Less Expensive Alternative that Provides NSF/ANSI 42 Level Filtering
What I can confirm with certainty is that the CO-Z Water Filters do fit my non-Berkey gravity water filter system. They are a slightly different design than the original Berkey BB9-2 filters, which is only to say that they look slightly different, not to imply that they don’t work. They do.On its Amazon point-of-purchase page, CO-Z states that their filters are” NSF-Certified Filter: Certified by NSF/ANSI 42 from food-grade material.” And they further state that they are “BPA-free and lead-free,” to which I say, I would hope so.The filters are individually wrapped and delivered in retail packaging. The box makes no mention of an NSF/ANSI certification, which I found odd, since those certifications are expensive. Filters with those certifications hold the significance of being validated by a national standards institute; if it were my product, I’d be sure to make that point on the packaging. As a reference, according to the NSF and ANSI rating agencies, a filter with an NSF/ANSI 42 rating means that it will eliminate Chlorine, taste and odor, chloramine, particulate, iron, manganese, zinc and reduce total dissolved solids (TDS) to a level not exceeding 500 mg/L. This standard establishes minimum requirements for systems designed to reduce non-health-related contaminants. In other words, these filters should make for tasty drinking water. There is no indication that they will filter out health related contaminants that could cause you serious harm.Berkey claims that their black BB9-2 filters, that are not certified by NSF/ANSI, but are independently lab tested, exceed an NSF/ANSI rating of 53. Filters certified to have a 53 rating are those that eliminate health-related-contaminants. They should provide potable water from raw sewage, which is more less Berkey’s claim.CO-Z states that their filters will provide effective filtration for up to 6000 gallons of water. Of note is the fact that CO-Z does not make mention or comparisons of themselves to Berkey filters, as most others do. The comparisons to Berkey in this review are mine and stated for reference only. However, I think that anyone considering these filters can’t help but be aware of the implication.

Great replacement for my Berkeys!
I ordered these for backup to my Berkey's filter and have used them for a few weeks so far and the water filtered through these tastes great. The filters are a little shorter than my Berkey filters; however, they are also slightly larger and weigh almost the same so you are getting about the same amount of filter for a better price. The construction and the silicone washer were excellent quality and my only regret is that I did not but thier filter container as well as it would have saved me considerable $$ over what I paid for my big name brand..
