The potatoes are amazingly good but cost prohibitive
We used to buy these at another place and they are outstanding. These are very good but the cost is just too much here so we won’t be buying them here again.

How Good These Potatoes Are When Cooked in Kaola Gold Shortening
** Updated 4/7/2018 - Went to Waffle House this morning and talked to the cook - she easily admitted the potatoes used were in fact dehydrated - but she said not to follow the instructions on the box calling for adding hot water - she said they use tap water and double the soaking time - she said using hot water tended to make a mushier hash brown. I watched her make 20 or so orders and the scoop she uses appears to be about a full 1 cup.Like most folks I was a little skeptical that freeze dried or dehydrated potatoes could be so delicious. It all started with a Google search for a copycat recipe for hash brown potatoes prepared at The Waffle House. We uncovered a trove of information all leading towards the fact Waffle House uses dehydrated potatoes in their hash browns. The most prevalent product mentioned was Idaho Spuds Golden Grill Potatoes with Amazon being the primary supplier of these little jewels. They are offered in an 8-Pack of what looks like 1 pint cardboard milk cartons - easy instructions say to open box, fill with very hot water up to the fill line, cover and let sit for 12 minutes - all that worked like a charm and we poured them out of the carton into a bowl and headed for the stove and hot skillet. The link for these little spuds is:https://www.amazon.com/Idaho-Spuds-Gluten-Golden-Hashbrowns/dp/B00470NIOO/ref=sr_1_2_s_it?s=grocery&ie=UTF8&qid=1520783253&sr=1-2&keywords=idaho+spuds&dpID=51sf66IVZtL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srchThere are over 600 reviews for this item and various opinions expressed. It is also worth noting these spuds also come in a large 33-ounce box that claims to make 50 servings. The smaller 4.2-ounce boxes claim to make 4 servings – both assumptions are based on using about 1/2 cup of newly reconstituted potatoes – Appetites vary greatly so counting on 2-3 servings from the 4.2-ounce box seems to be the prevailing opinion and I concur even though I could eat a whole box because they are so good.Cooking experiences expressed in the 600+ reviews varied greatly disagreeing from the box instructions to cook for 3-4 minutes on one side and for extra crispness, turn and cook on the other side for 3 minutes. Reports were made where it took 10 minutes to brown theirs. Some folks swore by a non-stick pan while others expressed good ole cast iron skillets. I tried both. With a high-end copper/Teflon nonstick pan it took nearly 10 minutes to brown the first side before flipping. When using Grandma’s cast iron skillet, they easily browned to a crunch in 4 minutes. In the experiments I found using the round egg/potato ring (sprayed inside with Pam) to work the best – you are not supposed to move them during cooking first side (just like at The Waffle House). Everyone had an opinion on how much cooking oil to use and some added butter to oil before putting in the potatoes (butter WILL enhance the browning process). I like the butter option best. Most everyone said (and I agree) to put oil/butter/Kaola on top of potatoes before turning so 2nd side had something to cook in.So, if you have read any of the 600+ Amazon reviews, my hope is this helps clear up some of the confusion and or discrepancies. I have a gas stove and some of the 10-minute versions reported could easily have been cooked on an electric stove in addition to many other variables.Additional spuds info that may interest folks – gluten-free and non-GMOBUT THERE IS ONE MORE VALUABLE PIECE OF INFORMATION uncovered while Googling about Waffle House Hash Browns and it is the magic Kaola Gold Premium Pan and Grill Shortening – also available in 1-gallon jugs, you guessed it on AMAZON! Here is the link:https://www.amazon.com/Ventura-Foods-Premium-Shortening-Gallon/dp/B01MSB7A7I/ref=sr_1_1_s_it?s=grocery&ie=UTF8&qid=1520784716&sr=1-1&keywords=kaola+gold&dpID=31mQMpUvIrL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srchKaola is not as hard as Crisco or Lard and not as runny as corn oil – some reviewers complained they couldn’t get it to come out of a squirt bottle for their outdoor Blackstone griddles. I found it relatively easy to fill a 1-pint mason jar and put a lid on it – it easily spoons out for future use. The Kaola oil secret came from a lady that worked at Waffle House and after using it, I have no doubts. It has a bit of a buttery flavor and with your first use, you may tend to use more than needed but you will quickly learn what works best for you. Their product info says to use it on hash browns, eggs, steaks, fish or anywhere else you may use a cooking oil. I used Kaola while frying eggs in a non stick skillet and those eggs skid around like nothing I'd ever seen before.IMHO Idaho Potato Spuds + Kaola Gold just put the Waffle House in my kitchen. Enjoy. This is much easier than peeling and washing potatoes and yields better hash browns. These were delivered in 2 days on Amazon Prime promise all in good conditions.Idaho Spuds Non GMO Gluten Free Golden Grill Hashbrowns, 8 CountGOLDEN GRILL Russet Premium Hashbrown Potatoes 33 oz.
