Callas first sang Bellini’s Norma in 1948, when she was just 25. She went on to perform the role of the heroic, but vulnerable Druid priestess – the ultimate embodiment of bel canto – more frequently than any other. In this second studio recording her conductor was again Tullio Serafin (he originally tutored her in the role in 1948), and the venue was again La Scala – where the opera was premiered in 1831. By 1960, Callas brought a wealth of new nuance to her interpretation, and she is aptly partnered by the creamy-voiced Christa Ludwig (in a rare recording of an Italian role) and the towering Franco Corelli. Review: A wonderful Norma - I adore this recording. Yes, some of the top notes sound a little strained but all in all Maria Callas gives a wonderful performance; dramatic, soulful, layered. The rest of the cast are superb, especially Christa Ludwig. The sound quality is very good. Review: New remastering is a triumph. - I have owned this version since the early 70s. This remastering is a revelation. The pitch has been corrected to studio conditions and where the electric supply was up and down during the initial recording process these have been corrected. It a revelation. A must have.

This was one of the first complete opera CDs I ever purchased back in the late 1980s and now it’s even better. Great to hear it again and so revitalised. Such an improvement in the sound quality over the old CD edition.

I was simply blown away by the quality of this recording. A zillion stars and thank you to the engineers who "cleaned" tho old tapes. The whole opera sounds like it was recorded these days, but with voices that are long gone. Maria Callas is sublime in Norma. But her pairing with Franco Corelli is incredible, and no words can describe it. These guys are the best Norma and Polione ever. Warner did a great job with Maria Calas recorded opera. I own a few Norma even with Maria Callas. But this one blu all the others away. There are 3 CDs, but I don't mind changing the CD while playing. I am so happy I found this. If you love Callas or Corelli these CDs are the best of best.
