You can't help but identify with Water Street
Water Street, Wilkinson's follow-up to Blackberries, Blackberries, once again sets the reader right in the middle of Kentucky culture. Focusing her short stories on fictional inhabitants of Water Street creates a novel-like feel in the character studies exploring the interconnectedness of the characters of Water Street. Wilkinson's stories examine human experience without being preachy. Wilkinson again demonstrates the challenges and joys of the human experience through her exquisite use of vernacular, description, setting and character.

I Grew Up on a street like this
I grew up on a street like the one in the book, only it was in Los Angeles California in the 30's and the 40's where everyone knew everyone else and our dreams and concerns were shared by all. I wanted to stay with these people and learn more even though the author only gave us snap shots of the people on the street. The snap shots were beautifuly crafted and wonderful to read.

Good read
Enjoyed the book and the style. I like meeting each new person and recognised most of them. Underneath we are all the same and have our foibles, likes, dislike and our own story. I liked the interconnections too. Well paced and written. This is a book I may read again just to capture all the links and how the presonalities interact.

A beautiful, lyrical novel you won't soon forget
Water Street is a beautiful, lyrical novel woven together through multiple characters and their relationships to one another. Set in Kentucky, WS brings a rural black community alive with rich detail and unforgettable characters. Speaking as a high school ELA and AP teacher, this novel's pacing, craft, and themes are perfect for classroom use.

OK
His is not exactly a story with a beginning, a middle and an end. It is little bits of life from several people who live on water street.

Short Story Collection with a difference!
This was an excellent short story collection about the black community living in and around Water Street in Kentucky. All of the characters have special stories to tell about themselves; that will hook you unlike most short story collections. The special thing about this collection is that the characters and their stories are slightly linked to one another. this is what gives the collection a certain feel of community. Wilkerson's writing is animated and descriptive. The stories cover themes like family, love, race, growing old among others. This would be great for anyone who is interested in reading about African-Americans and everyday life situations. Well worth the read!
