DO NOT BUY - Unless YOU love GL-iNET
I LOVE THIS PRODUCT!... I know, I know, that might seem like a plot twist, given the headline. But stick with me for a second. I’ve been the proud (and occasionally frustrated) owner of this portable router since February 2024, and while it’s a sleek little piece of hardware when it works, there are a few too many "buts" that have me questioning my purchase. Let’s break it down: 1. IT OVERHEATS. And when I say overheats, I mean like a Hollywood action hero running through a fireball, except less cool and more inconvenient. If you live or travel anywhere warm, prepare to watch your router go from hero to zero in record time. August 16th will go down in history as the day my Mudi v2’s battery decided it was done. It no longer functions on the go, though it still works when connected to a power outlet. So much for portable. 2. Incapable hardware. Yeah, I said it. My dream was to pop in a 1TB MicroSD card and have my own little media hub, sharing files and movies across all my devices. But alas, this dream was crushed. Whether the feature was quietly axed or never really there, it turns out the hardware just isn’t up to the task. Sure, OpenWRT could bring it back from the dead, but that’s like adding jet fuel to a paper airplane. Expect more overheating. Yay. 3. Battery life that’ll leave you thirsty. Speaking of power, this thing drains faster than a man lost in the Sahara with a single bottle of water. Even in standby mode, the battery’s doing everything but saving itself. You’ll be charging this little guy more often than you’d like to admit. 4. 4G (but maybe 5G if you’re willing to sell a kidney). Yes, the WiFi antenna is replaceable and upgradable to 5G, but here’s the kicker—it’ll cost you almost as much as a new Mudi V2. Ouch. So, what’s my advice? Hold off for something better. Grab yourself a simple, cheap 4G travel router that doesn’t promise the moon and leave you with a handful of moon rocks. Or, if you’re still into GL-iNet, consider one of their other routers that doesn’t have a battery. At least those know what they’re doing. Update Feb 14th 2025: Because the device was still under warranty and my battery died unable to use it on the go, GL-INET was very straightforward and diligent to send me a new uni, right now I have a brand new Mudi sealed in the box, mostly because the novelty wear off and I don't need a device like this currently as I am WFH and I have the GL-INET Beryl, which does the job. I've updated my stars from 3 to 4 because of the customer service and their reliability. I would love to keep the Mudiv2 but as it is now it still lacks what I am looking on all rounded product. My priorities have also changed and I don't require to be on Wifi all the time, and my phone does the job better with hotspot, as it overheats less or not at all. This product just need more baking, however if I had to travel again, i would probably use the beryl in combination with my phone.

Need a degree to operate this
I bought this as it is capable of installing a VPN. I Purchased Nordvpn and configured the router to use it. Not straightforward. There are then 2 options for the configuration Openvpn, which is free and Wireguard, which is a subscription service. I have used Tplink and Huawei Mifi devices in the past and found the user interface straightforward and simple to use. This is a very complicated device. I also found the device temperature to get very warm 111 degrees Fahrenheit which is, according to customer support , normal! I believe that it got hotter than this but didn't know how to find the temperature in the app at the time. Why on earth do you even need a temperature gauge? I bought this as it was the cheapest option on the market, on hindsight not the best decision. I was also advised not leave it plugged in but if you don't power it down overnight the battery will be dead in the morning, I guess no more than 7 hours usage if your lucky.

Received faulty
Oled screen so dim you can't see or recognise anything in daylight is no brightness settings in the control panel. It arrived with fully battery discharged. I tried to change but after 30 min became so hot I decided to send it back.

Don't buy it.
I have used a lot of Gl.inet products. From the original little Blue box, the USB Microrouter and two GL-SFT1200. I appreciate their innovation and excellent products. So for a recent trip I the GL.Inet Mudi and Esim seemed to tick all the boxes. I knew that I would be travelling but also my wife's ipad doesn't have a lot of space so being able to pop a SD Card into pre-loaded with her media would work great. Little did I know how rubbish this would be. The SD Card sharing had been removed by a firmware update but it's still advertised on here. Having loaded the feature back on, it would just stopped working at random times. Rebooting it worked but only sometimes. The Esim would sometimes work and other times not, it wasn't based on signal. I purchased a Esim profile but it just wouldn't take the APN details for that esim profile and decided to eventually not recognize and sim card at all. Now I'm home I've decided to reset it and remove the media sharing. But really it's probably too much trouble. I think I'll just return it and take the hit on the esim failing.

Needs a good signal
OK but not in a poor signal area. No external antennae connections.

Disappointing Experience
I don’t recommend this router—its limitations outweigh its benefits. The network coverage is a strong point, providing reliable signal even in areas with poor reception, and the VPN feature with a kill switch works well. However, that’s where the positives end. My main goal was to use USB tethering with my laptop or phone via USB-C, but this feature isn’t supported, which was a dealbreaker. I’ll be returning it. Additionally, the router’s security is overstated. It doesn’t receive regular security patches, leaving it vulnerable to hacks, especially when broadcasting Wi-Fi in public. This also raises concerns about radiation exposure from constant Wi-Fi signals. The battery life is extremely poor, and it charges other devices very slowly, making it impractical for travel. Overall, this router doesn’t deliver on its promises, so I’d advise against purchasing it.

I have had a mobile hotspot router in some form or another since the mid 00's. As a mobile professional, phone provided hotspot just doesn't cut it for me. So, instead of buying another carrier device this time around, I decided to give the mudi a try. This is by far the best cellular router that I have ever owned, and I will be returning my MR1100! Some things to know: - Yes, this will work on AT&T if your SIM is provisioned properly. Fair warning: it is a kind of in depth process and not for the non-technical. But, I'd imagine if you are buying this device, you are probably a tech pro anyway. - Yes, this will also work on T-mobile. But..... beware, flipping back and forth between t-mobile and AT&T is a PAIN, and required multiple modem resets and reboots of the device. Same for GoogleFI (t-mobile network with a different APN) - This device uses a Quectel EC25-AF modem, a CAT4 LTE device, and is going to get you 25mbps down and 10-15mpps up here in the USA (+/-) Be sure that this meets your bandwidth needs. Else, consider a device with a CAT6 or a CAT10 modem with multi-MIMO. The modem is NOT m.2 format, and is NOT interchangable! - No external antenna ports. But, IMHO, that is not the way to go anyway. Boosters > antennas in my experience, and ts9 connectors are very fragile. If you find yourself in need of better signal, try going into AT commands, and manually switching bands to find the best throughput for you. I've gotten some better performance flopping between B66 and B14 on AT&T, and B12 and B71 on T-mobile... but this is highly dependent on location. YMMV. - recommend installing an openVPN profile from your VPN provider, and then setting the side switch to connect your OpenVPN client automagically when flipped. I am not a huge fan of the TOR functionality at this time. But, more experimentation may yield better results. - you can install miniDLNA from the applications tab if you want to mediashare from the router. Just be advised, CPU utilization on the device may be higher while using it. I have succcessfully added a 256gb SD card, filled it with media, and streamed to my samsung tv. Good performance! - I set my ethernet port to WAN, and plugged into my local switch. Confirmed WAN offload to ethernet and no data plan usage. This is very useful in hotels, etc!!!! - Confirmed MAC spoofing for basic captive portals is working. If you are in a hotel with a basic captive portal, connect using an ephemeral MAC on a single device, now use that same device to connect to the management page of the router, and enter that MAC into the captive portal page. Now, change your MAC back on the other device and reconnect. You have now bypassed the captive portal using the router, and can connect multiple devices to your router without having to go through the captive portal. VERY USEFUL!!!!! Time will tell how this device holds up to the rigors of travel. For the moment, I am a happy camper! Thanks Gl.iNet!

Veramente ottimo, funziona perfettamente con TIM. Unico punto, devi sapere cosa stai facendo e cosa stai comprando, non è plug and play.

it’s pretty slow to start up, the proprietary adaptor for ethernet is annoying, even set up from an iphone hotspot can take a bit of work to get it going buy having the vpn and storage is pretty handy design wise it’s slippery as hell and will get scratched up a rubber base or rubber feet would really perfect an already great product 5 stars cos it’s better than the nighthawk m1 i replaced it with and isn’t obscenely expensive

Great, carefully thought of product. Only working LTE router with OpenVPN and Wireguard functionality. Even has a SD card so that I can put a 1TB Micro SD and make it a NAS on the go. I travel a lot and I need VPN to my office when I do. This is a excellent choice for me. I cannot wait until a compact travel 5G router to be available. Hopefully they will make one soon.

I was looking for a device for my travelling. (Business / Road trip / camping) it does it all, and very well! I highly recommend this device for any of its functions. You can even, with the flip of a switch, VPN (or even TOR, yes built in without any add-on) your connection. The only thing I couldn’t recommend is the file sharing with a sdcard, because I didn’t need (or tried) I used the LTE with my share plan from Telus, and reception was great. Even when my cell was getting low signal( at a camping site) I used it (signal was a little higher on the device than my phone) to let my phone connect to it with wifi so my phone wasn’t draining its battery because of the low LTE signal! Battery with it is also great and really last more than 10hrs on LTE with wifi activity in its SSID! It’s really a good purchase without any regrets
