Altitude related hypoxemia is related to air pressure. The oxygen percentage is constant from the top of Everest to Death Valley. The difference is pressure. The device applies pressure to the expiratory phase which dilates the alveoli that collapse under the lower pressure and bring that portion of the lung back into use. It has been tested and proven to work, not only by us, but by many others in the medical literature. This device is just a simple application of PEEP that can be used for any athlete or climber. Yes, you breathe normally. Inhale is always natural. Exhale has a slight amount of pressure (like exhaling under water in a pool) - in healthcare it's referred to as PEEP.

Q: What about sucking in bugs?

To avoid sucking in bugs I think you need to breath in through your nose and only out through your mouth.
