Brilliant, it actually saved from getting a shock.
I used them recently when checking the light cords in our bathroom, we have two. Turns out that one of them for the shower cubicle is not wired from the upstairs lighting circuit, but has its only live from a separate shower wiring. After switching off the upstairs lighting at the RCB, and checking both cords, I proceeded to unscrew the shower cord cover and to be on the safe side I used this tester which sounded the alarm as soon as I got close to the live wire, with red warning light. Wow, it made me jump, but rather that then get an imminent electric shock. So thank you to the producer of a life saving gadget.

Useful tool, poor instructions.
The pen arrives in a small box, the only extras being the batteries and instructions. It has to be said that the instructions are really poor, especially for a safety critical device such as this. You can more or less understand what's trying to be said but you shouldn't have to guess. As far as testing goes the pen picks up all known live electrical plugs and wires that I tried as well as a few middling false positives on wires not carrying A/C mains voltage that I tried out of curiosity. The pen has to be fairly close to the source you want to test, I tend to keep the pen on high sensitivity as it alerts quicker as you approach a live wire. Definitely cannot be used to test for buried wires in walls, even just thick wire shielding can affect the accuracy of the pen.The listing shows a LO-HI indication however the pen I received never shows either except for when first turning on in which LO can be seen. The strongest indication on the pen I received is high frequency beeping, all bars shown on a red background, a lightning symbol above AC and high frequency red flashing at the tip.The flashlight feature is handy and can still be used when testing wires, it'll make the red flashing at the tip of the pen somewhat less obvious but all other indicators are still there (beeping, display colour, bars).A tool I foresee using to sanity check my understanding of the wires in front of me, testing for those which should be carrying mains AC voltage rather than relying on the pen solely before making changes to the wiring, for that I would always check thoroughly with a multimeter first.£9.49 as of writing.4/5

it did what it said it would do
Correctly tested for the presence of 240 volts and enabled the work to be completed safely.

Great gadget to ensure safe working
Great little gadget - I have tested it all over the house and am confident it keeps me safe doing electrical work

Works well
Works great, however it makes an audible beep when it powers off (automatically) after I don't know 2 or 3 mins. I must admit I get a fright each time as I think it has detected a live circuit. Keeps me on my toes.

Non-contact voltage tester
The tester is lightweight and easy to hold, though the plastic moulded case feels a little fragile. It arrived with two AAA batteries fitted in the tool, which had to be removed and popped back in the correct orientation. This is good as it means the batteries will not have drained in storage. The poorly written English in the manual makes it hard to understand the technical notes, though the instructions are clear enough to operate the tool safely. The display is protected by a clear plastic film that peels off. Power up by pressing the red button for a second and the tester starts with a clear beep. The display has a strong green backlight. The green button enables high sensitivity mode and switches on the flashlight. The tester makes audible beeps and a red LED flashes when it detects an electric field, the frequency increasing with a stronger electric field. The device is good at detecting electric fields, depending on distance and materials between the source of the electric field and the probe. In low sensitivity mode it responded to a live thin power cable when 1 cm away, but had to be touching a live thick power cable to get a response. For a 13A wall socket switched on the tester beeped with the probe on the live pin, and stopped beeping with mains switched off. There were no beeps on the Earth or Neutral pins. The tester does not detect live sunken mains cables. The high sensitivity mode beeps wherever it is placed, so too sensitive and really of little practical use in the home. This device is easy to operate and can be used as a comparative tool to monitor a circuit before and after a change. I like the concept of non-contact confirmation of a live mains circuit, and this device offers that at a great price. The tester will be an interesting addition to my toolkit, bearing in mind its limitations.
