Aspiring writer Hubbell Gardiner (Robert Redford) and Jewish political activist Katie Morosky (Barbra Streisand) meet at college in the 1930s. Although attracted to each other, a romance does not ensue. However, they meet again during the Second World War, beginning an affair which eventually leads to marriage. But the relationship comes under strain when Katie begins to feel that Hubbell, pursuing his writing career in California, is beginning to sell out. Marvin Hamlisch won an Oscar for his sweeping score. Review: Great Movie About Ill Fated Love - I am not a Barbara Steistand fan. Papa cannot hear me. I know she's a big deal in the Jewish community and I remember the running joke on The Nanny of Fran's obsession with Barbara. She's not the greatest actress but I guess to be fair the same can be said about Whitney. However both legends were great singers who could hold their own in a movie just like Justin Timberlake in his films. Yet, I love her singing the titled song in the opening scene along with the beautiful montage of Robert Redford. I never knew anything about this movie until Carrie referenced this movie in Sex in the City and did the ending to Big. I think Fran referenced it jokingly in The Nanny to but I was too young to realize it at the time so it went over my head. However, Robert Redford is in his prime was a beautiful man just like Brad Pitt was in his prime especially in films like Legends of The Fall. Two great movies to admire Redford in are this one and Barefoot in the Park even though he did so many movies in his youth. Yet, you fall in love with the characters. You root for the idealistic Katie pursuing the beautiful Hubbell who is completely out of her league and even though he can have any woman he wants, she convinces him to be with her. They love each other, but are completely wrong for each other and see the ever changing world in two different ways. They have many great scenes together and brings the 1940s to life. Two of my favorite scenes are them arguing when they have to go to Washington for the Communist hearings I believe during McCarthism and when Hubbell is on a boat and he has to the name the best years of his life and he keep listing all the years with Katie. They eventually go their separate ways because love is not enough to keep a relationship together. The ending is one of the best endings ever when they run into each other years later after having moved on with their lives married to or in relationships with other people and have one last poignant scene together. Hubbell goes on with his life being the cool, collected, and charming Hubbell with everything coming easy to him and Katie goes on with her life fighting for the causes she cares about. Very obvious they still love each other even though their relationship did not work out and the reminisce about the way they were. Great movie that sticks with you. The characters are relatable. Their relationship was realistic. I have been a Katie in love with a Hubbell and no matter how hard we tried the relationship didn't work because we were too different but we are still on good terms with one another and can look back from time to time on the good moments of the way we were then something happens that reminds us the reason the way we were is not the way we are today which is happy and at peace without the headache of being with each other. Beautiful story that captures a moment in time in two people's lives that anyone can relate to and enjoy for a couple hours. Review: The Way We Were DVD - Good Movie

Great movie, infuriating ride!!
This is a great old movie with iconic actors but be ready for an infuriating ride. Spoilers ahead!! Basically this movie is about Katie (Barbara Streisand) in college (and onward) and how she stays true to her character from the beginning. She has strong morals that she is always fighting for. She's a part of anti-war groups and is always organizing, working hard at everything she gets involved with. I think she just thought Hubbell was hot because why else would she get with him??? Like I guess they shared a love for writing? I wasn't convinced he ever loved or even liked her throughout the entire movie!! It was a horror/romance film while we watch this coward of a man take the woman protagonist away from what she was fighting for, knock her up, then have an affair with his ex girlfriend, then LEAVE HER after their child was born!!! What an absolute deadbeat!!! And Katie didn't even yell at him for having an affair or get mad, it was worse; she just got quiet and knew it was the end. I only watched this movie because Carrie from Sex and the City quoted it as such a good burn to Big but WOW. It wasn't a burn in this movie. Katie was just like "you and your new wife should come over for a drink" "your girl is lovely Hubbell" and wasn't like "you wanted simple and easy because you want everything in life to come easy to you because it always has and I have an actual spine so you don't deserve me!" I wish she had said that instead. Hubbell was the depiction of patriarchy personified. Katie did everything for him, cooked, read his work, encouraged him, pushed him to meet his potential, all while he just basically ignored her and asked her to shut up. He liked his proximity to someone with principals and an actual personality but then as soon as he had to work just a liiiiittttle bit at the relationship he ran away and never checked up on his child!! This movie is a cautionary tale, don't go for the hot himbo, go for someone who is hot AND aligned with your principals and appreciates you for who you are, not what you do for them. UGH!!! Hubbell is a low life!! But well done Robert Redford (RIP) for depicting this character so well to make me have this reaction. And beautiful cinematography and pacing of the film.

One of a kind . Requires a few watches. Grab your tissue box.
I re watched this after the passing of Robert Redford - not sure if I ever really watched it all the way through before. After watching some deleted scenes with Barbra Streisand explaining how the deleted scenes changed the whole trajectory of the film , I am back here watching again. It is hard to explain the magic of Robert Redford - clearly the most beautiful actor to even grace the screen - all wrapped up in a calm cool humility. Just the opening song turns on the water works ... I literally have to have a tissue box with me the entire movie. Moving in a way that cannot be reproduced these days.
