John William Waterhouse (1849-1917) has become one of the most popular of the Victorian painters, and his wistful female figures are widely reproduced icons. In this study of the artist, Peter Trippi reviews the life of this surprisingly enigmatic man, concentrating in particular on Waterhouse's depiction of women.
