Should be standard reading!
47....haven't seen a dr. for more than a cold since I left the Army at 22 years old. Imagine my surprise when Kidney Stones hit me last month!Well, as this book (and my Dr.) pointed out...I was "working hard" at making Kidney stones! How? oh...just being "healthy!" I got a Nutribullet....I stuffed Kale and Spinich in it....threw in all kinds of nuts....then added blueberries and razberries to cover the taste of the kale...then I added a scoop or two of protein powder....and I drank this "healthy" shake 2 times a day for months! Oh sure...I dropped the pounds and thinned up considerably....but I NEVER realized that my "shake" consisted of 5 of the top 10 WORST things to eat for making kidney stones! I mean...who talks about that? (Kale, Spinich and Beet root are all tied for the number one offender spot in the book!) Then throw in rapid weight loss, not enough water, eating too much additional protein, and loving tomato sauce....and I "hit" about NINE of the top 10 worst things you can do....every day/every week! The book is SO full of knowledge!Never had anything so painful...NEVER want them again! I read this entire book in 2 days WHILE on 3 pain meds they gave me to help pass them! I have since gone back several time to several passages with highlighter and stick note "tabs" I made. I have learned SO much. The book is technical...but not too much....and it's SO complete. The restaurant guides and food lists are worth every penny - the entire book is. I hear of people getting them over and over - my Dr. says it's mostly because they don't change their diets....but I can't imagine why not. I'm VERY motivated and have not had ANY problems changing my diet!

Good Information
My wife recently had a huge kidney stone that had to be removed surgically. The Urologist recommended this book. It contains a lot of good information.

Preventing future kidney stones
After being diagnosed with kidney stones, passing three on my own and having two separate surgeries, I decided to take the advice of my nephrologist to prevent them from recurring. This book is a textbook of knowledge covering areas relating to how the stones are formed, causes and multiple plans of action to prevent them from occurring again. My book is "highlighted", paperclipped and "dog-eared" to easily locate golden nuggets of wisdom that I don't want to forget. Because this approach is a multi-faceted one, it requires multiple changes to be made in one's lifestyle. Some of the changes I had to make were diet (switching to low-oxalate), increasing consumption of water, calcium with meals, strict reduction of salt and the decrease of my diuretics. This book gives explanation and suggestions as to how to make the changes work for you. It does require a juggling act and this straight-forward "textbook" has been a great source for staying on course, that is to prevent future kidney stones. It is easy reading and comes in chapters by subject. However, I found it most helpful to mark the items (as you would mark up a "textbook") that specifically were important for ME to remember for easy quick reference.

The book came from a secondary source and was in good condition. There was a second index page in the front of the book but did not distract from the book and the ability to read it. This book gave good information for people who have experienced kidney stones. It describes the various forms of stones and the author is honest in his advice. What I found most helpful was a list of foods I could and could not eat and the way in which to eat it by drinking extra water. I had utilized web sites that all gave conflicting advice on what to eat but this book helped to sort all of that out in clear information for the lay person yet describing what is going on with kidney stones in our bodies. I would recommend this book to anyone who has suffered through kidney stones or who have loved ones who have. Very good information about treatments, medications, stones in general, and foods to eat including when you eat ethnic foods.
