Metallica - the dark days
Metallica - the Troubled years. This is an excellent biography of Metallica's post-Black Album era, up to Death Magnetic. It's not exactly cheerful, though. Most Metallica fans will probably agree that there's been a few judgement errors by our favourite band during the nineties and beyond and it feels like these are the main focus of this second volume of 'Birth, School, Metallica, Death'.So, we'll read all about Napster, Jason Newsted's departure, therapy sessions and the (completely dismal) St Anger album. The authors are clearly fans and very much in the band's corner, but that doesn't stop them from reflecting in a less favourable light on these mis-steps. Much focus is placed on Lars Ulrich, inevitably, and the book reads like a dedicated and caring friend pointing out all his mistakes. The tone of the book is a lot like 'yes, Metallica were amazing, but where do they go from here?', which isn't an unreasonable question. I kind of hope Winwood and Brannigan have the chance to do a third volume, and that the answer to the question is a good one. I'm still rooting for Metallica.
