Food Allergies: A Complete Guide for Eating When Your Life Depends on It (A Johns Hopkins Press Health Book)

Similar to a series of appointments with an allergist
This book is entirely in q&a format, which can be frustrating to try to read through at length. However, it does a decent job of presenting what would happen if you took notes at a series of appointments with a good allergist to discuss food allergies. The information is based on current knowledge and practice, and matches what I've heard from the heads of the pediatric food allergy programs at two major Boston hospitals as well as a number of other allergists. If you're not sure whether the advice you're getting from your allergist is reasonable or if you keep leaving allergist appointments thinking "I wish I'd asked a few more questions," this book can be incredibly helpful.

Contains errors, discredits holistic health
As someone who has done extensive research on allergies, I was disappointed that this book contains quite a few factual / scientific errors. It is also disappointing how the author discredits Functional Medicine, Integrative Medicine and Naturopathy. It's almost as if the author is insecure about his knowledge or own medical training so he just criticizes holistic health without understanding it. The format of questions and answers makes it easy to follow, that's the only redeeming thing about this book.

A Valuable and Accessible Overview
This is the second, updated, edition of the book that came out in 2013. I suspect that, if you or your child has allergies, this book would be pretty basic and mostly helpful for a few ideas or maybe a new perspective on new threats, (pink peppercorns?), or new treatment options. But, if you are like me and just want a basic treatment of allergens, tests, treatments, and further sources of support and information, then this book is just right. We start out with a brief overview of what an allergic reaction is, (symptoms, causes triggers), and review common food allergens. Particularly helpful was the extended chapter on tests, (skin, blood, component, elimination diets, and food challenges). From there we move to chronic conditions related to food allergy, avoidance at home and school, and lifestyle and nutrition options. The final sections on prevention and cure were more sketchy, but the discussion of anaphylaxis and epinephrine was especially helpful and could literally be life saving.Like all technical and specialized texts I'm sure there are answers here with which knowledgeable readers might quibble. But for an interested newcomer I found this book extremely informative and helpful.(Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

Comprehensive overview, fills in all the blanks I had after diagnosis
Super helpful at answering a thousand questions I had for the allergist but didn't have time to ask. I also expect this to be a great resource to help me educate my allergic kids' teachers, camp directors, grandparents, etc. -- I'm planning on buying a copy for their preschool. This was published prior to the tragic death of a young boy during a milk challenge earlier this fall. The book specifically states that no deaths are known to have ever occurred during a food challenge. Obviously that's not true anymore, and I wished as I was reading that I could've known how the author would've changed the section on oral food challenges as a result.

Very good book that handles food allergies with a Q&A structure
Very good book that handles food allergies with a Q&A structure, that , in my opinion, makes the book a very easy reading allowing the reader to search only for the information he is interested to know.Ottimo libro strutturato in forma di domanda e risposta che permette al lettore di leggere anche solo le informazioni che gli interessano.

A must have
This is a great book, it has so many questions that pop up in your head randomly or you forgot to ask the allergist at the appointment. I borrowed this from the library and I was so impressed with it I'm buying my own copy. It's written a very factual way but one that a not medical person can actually understand
