First Thousand Words In Japanese Mini Paperback – 27 Sept. 2002

For anybody attempting to learn Japanese, whether as a child or an adult, this book one I would highly recommend. Whilst intended for children, it is a refreshing addition to the wealth of text based resources available.Each double page within the book features a full colour illustration, (e.g. of a party, rooms within the home, a hospital etc). Then, surrounding each double page illustration is a border with further illustrations of items within the picture and beneath each picture both the romaji and kana to explain what each would be in Japanese. Whilst the English translation or equivalent word or term is not featured, the pictures are of sufficient quality to make it perfectly clear what is being described. Further, because what each word refers to is revealed via an image rather than a written word, the book can be used by speakers of any language, and not just English speakers.Further, each picture features hidden 'rubber ducks' in a 'Where's Wally' way that readers can search for. Providing a bit of fun for younger learners, searching for the 'hidden ducks' also involves looking closely at the picture which, I found at least, resulted in seeing and learning more than I would have had they not been there. Then, you are picking new words and translations up without even realising it. I thought this was a clever and nice touch.As the title of the book implies, it contains translations for 1000 common places words which are for the most part concrete nouns such as table, bath, hospital, train station etc. That said, the book also features pages on how to tell the time, count in Japanese and converse on a very basic level.The book also contains a link to an accompanying website where readers can find auditory pronunciations of every single word contained within the book. The website is exceptionally user friendly and well organised making it very simply to search for the pronunciation you require.In conclusion, the book is a welcome and fun addition or alternative to the myriad of text laden 'adult' orientated titles out there that can seem somewhat overwhelming and intimidating to those new to learning Japanese language.

This book is smaller than I expected and even though it's aimed at children, it's useful to expand your vocabulary in Japanese. This book is colourful and easy to carry about. It uses both hiragana and katakana. Each double page shows a different environment and extracts objects from the scenes and has the Japanese below each image. The items are also listed in English. Only problem is in my copy one of the pages seems to have a print fault and it's difficult to read the katakana. I can't be sure if this is just a flaw with my copy or if all the books are the same.

This little book is easy to use for all ages. The starts of the book helps you understand the Hiragana and Katakana scripts of Japanese. Pictures have the Japanese word next to them with the Romaji (English pronunciation). The categories covered are; House, kitchen, garden, shed, street, toy shop, park, zoo, travel, countryside, farm, beach, school, hospital, doctors, party, shopping, food, body, jobs, family, verbs, adjectives, days, occasions, weather, pets, sports, colours, shapes, numbers, fairground and circus. An easy way to learn Japanese.

The book is a fantastic learning tool, but it was only when I received it that I realised how much I was conned on the price.The book arrived in my letterbox it was so small. It was easily small enough to be posted with a first class stamp, and the price on the back of the book is £3.99. This is something I obviously was not aware of until I received the book.It was not a RRP either. It was a solid price.This seller charged £6.74Though it did arrive in mint condition and only two days after I had ordered it (though I was promised by Amazon next day free delivery when I clicked the order button) I think this seller is taking the Michel just a little bit.As I say though- can't fault the actual book. Excellent learning tool.

My 3 year old niece (English-Japanese) loves reading this book with her Mummy - and her English Daddy is said to be finding the book useful for learning too! Since starting at nursery, Hana had stopped speaking Japanese as much as she had done. I sent this book to Hana and her Mummy, Maho, has given the book the Japanese seal of approval. Hana loves her new book!I also have the French and German versions of this book for myself and that is what prompted me to buy this Japanese version - they are highly recommended.

Yup. Exactly 1000 words. I'm that OCD I had to count them 8D But hey are easily laid out, and because there are big colourful pictures with lots going on in them, it makes it fun to find the animal/object the word goes with in the picture.

Note only is it exception in user friendliness. The fact that you have this format with everything [pictures and so on ] the same in every language makes it advantageous to apply quickly to a second language.I recommend it to both beginners and to those intermediate students who after a comfortable way of increasing vocabulary.

The book is small therefore some pictures and words are hard to see. Every page has a theme: garden, school, shop etc but you only get a picture with hiragana/katagana and pronunciation, no kanji or English word equivalent. The latter you get at the end of the book as a sort of vocabulary list. I don't know if there are any mistakes yet, I haven't read it thoroughly. It's not a good book for learning but it's good enough for revision or if you like to guess what the pic/word means, I don't.All I can say is it's worth its price and I'll be using it.

Nettes Buch, einfach in der Handhabung. Es hat ein paar inhaltliche Fehler, aber diese kann man vernachlässigen. Kann man gut mit in die Straßenbahn usw. mitnehmen. Ein netter Zusatz für Kinder ist auch das kleine Suchspiel, auf jeder Seite ist eine kleine Ente versteckt.

Libricino colorato e pieno di immagini, adatto per insegnare ai propri figli il giapponese. Viste le dimensioni tascabili si può portare facilmente in una borsetta.Le parole mancano del corrispettivo in kanji, sono scritte in hiragana o katakana ma accanto ognuna di esse è riportata la lettura in romaji e, come in ogni altro libro di prime parole, vengono inserite in un contesto (ogni capitolo illustrato tratta un soggetto, tipo: cucina, viaggio, ospedale).Nel complesso non è male ma ci sono degli errori qua e là, per esempio nel capitolo にわ (niwa = giardino) l'irrigatore viene descritto come ごみいれ (gomiire = bidone della spazzatura), mentre il suo corrispettivo romaji è stato giustamente scritto come "supurinkura" poiché irrigatore deriva dalla parola inglese "sprinkler" che in giapponese si dice スプリンクラー , ma come ho fatto notare sul libro è erroneamente descritto come ごみいれ.Stessa storia, sempre nel capitolo にわ, per la parola lumaca, descritta in hiragana come やかん (bollitore) e in romaji giustamente descritta come "katatsumuri".Piccoli errori tipografici a parte, è un bel libro per bimbi che tratta molti argomenti, tra i quali anche はんたいのことば ("i contrari": grande/piccolo; pesante/leggero; veloce/lento; ecc), e questa è stata una piacevole sorpresa.Tutto sommato lo consiglio.

A very nice Japanese first word book. I have to order a second copy so I can write out the romaji words. I don't want to ruin my first copy. The writing is all in Hiragana/katana & Romaji (just like the cover and the book explains why in the first few pages) also why I need to order a second copy, so I can write the appropriate Kanji if there is one.This book is not for Kanji learners though, since it is an elementary 1st 1000 words. It teaches everything in Hiragana and Katana (with romaji) with a brief explanation on what Kanji is in the beginning and that's it. The pictures are lively and its easy to tell what each item correlates with each word. Even my little cousins (since i'm currently childless) ages 6, 7 and 8 have picked up the book and attempt to make the romaji sounds. Which is fun to watch.Will definately purchase again. It is a Scholastic book aimed at children but also good for teenage and adult learners who want to learn useful (mostly relevent, the book is from the 90s) Japanese words.

Mom got rid of the one I had as a child and it's just as nice as I remember it to be. Tons of simple vocabulary for kids, nice and big with a lot of artwork. Came undamaged with no issues. Bought for myself, but I highly recommend if you want an easy Japanese vocabulary book for a young child

das buch ist nicht nur handlich und für unterwegs geeignet es besteht aus tollem material. einfach und verständlich. ich würde es immer wieder kaufen =)
