Olympus PEN E–PL1 For Dummies

I couldn't believe my luck when I discovered that this book had been written especially for owners of my most recent purchase. At the time I was working my way through the manufacturer's instruction manual, which I found tedious and confusing. "Dummies" has not only been a fantastic way to understand the workings of the camera - it really gets to the logic of how its many features work, and uncovers quite a few that I would never have discovered - it has also been a lesson in the art of photography.For anyone new to the world outside the compact camera, this book hits the spot by being both informative and entertaining. It is not going to be of great value to the experienced amateur or pro, but the E-PL1 is probably not a camera for those segments either. So if you buy this camera, and there are many reasons why you should, then make absolutely sure that you add this book to the bundle.

I have an Olympus PEN E-PL3. It's my first digital SLR camera and I wanted to learn to utilise as much of its capability as possible beyond Auto setting!There didn't seem to be any 'How To' books specifically aimed at my particular version of the PEN Lite. So I took a chance and ordered this, hoping there were not too many differences between the E-PL1 and the E-PL3 to make the book unusable.As it is, the book is just perfect. The differences are not too difficult to overcome - mostly the E-PL3 is an upgrade of the same operating system. Julie Adair King is a superb teacher. She is encouraging, humorous, has a very plain way of explaining things and her enthusiasm makes you feel like you should never let your camera be anywhere else but within reach in your bag or forever hanging around your neck.If I could give this book more than five stars I would. Having full colour pages and a plethora of screenshots and sample pictures makes the book an essential companion for the photographer stepping up from the instant compact and wanting to get a little more creative and professional with photography. I purchased a 'Dummies' book before - to help understand InDesign - yet this blows that one out of the water. All 'For Dummies' books are not quite the same and this one shines out as a 10/10 example.

I have an Olympus E-PM1, which I got in January. I am a reasonably experience amateur having had film SLR's for many years, so I am qute familar with the basics of photography with film. This book is an excellent introduction to digital photography, both for those like me who want to use the creative features and for those who prefer the pint and shoot modes. I was looking for a book that covered my E-PM1 and this was the nearest I could find. The vast majority of the controls and settings are exactly the same so although I have a different model, I found it very easy to adapt the text and instructions to my particular camera. It was a well worthwhile purchase and I have learned a lot about the functions of this camera and picked up useful tips as well.

This is the first "for Dummies" book I have ever purchased and it turned out to be an excellent resource for learning how to use my new camera. The manual which comes with the camera can only take you so far and I was looking for something which would allow me to make best use of my new purchase.This book contains a wealth of information and tips on the Olympus PEN E-PL1. Well presented and the explanation of the various concepts is excellent. You'll find in its pages not just information about the PEN but also general help and suggestions on photography.I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to make best use of the PEN E-PL1.

fantastic book it should have come with the camera as standard as i found the manual about as clear as mudthe book takes u through the basic controles and set up through all u need 2 get started str8 awayit then helps u adapt menues 2 fit ur style of photography as well as many other subjects 2 do with the cameraif u have an E-pl1 u should have this book with the new wave of csc (compact system cameras) we now hav more controle then ever b4 with meens more menus and functions 2 learn so get a copy u wont regret it

Bought this to get to know my new EPL-2 and it was a 'BEST BUY' an instant hit, what more can I say, the controls are so close to EPL-2 that it doesn't matter that this was written for the EPL-1.Get this book for the EPL-2 cos' it really helps the beginner get to grips with a great camera in the EPL-1 and also the EPL-2. I have now ventured away from iAuto mode and finding a whole new world in what these cameras can offer when stepping up from a point and shoot.

Though I used film slr cameras for many years and a point and shoot digital camera I still found the Olympus Pen E-PL1 tricky to totally master at first, so this book, which is much better than the manual that comes with the camera, is proving invaluable as a full introduction to it and when I need it a reference too.If you're a beginner then this book will get you off the i-Auto mode and get you enjoying the possibilities what I am finding to be a great little camera.

This is just what I was looking for and was very surprised to see this book available specific to my camera.As usual with "for Dummmies" books it is well written with excellent illustrations which are all in colour too !If you own this camera I would recommend this book 100%

This book is extensive and covers all the topics on how to use you EPL1 camera properly. I find Olympus has a difficult user interface compared to Canon and Nikonk, so I really needed this book to help me use my EPL1 to its full potential. It is so great to really know your camera inside and out, and this book helped me do that. Excellent buy if you own and EPL1 and aren't sure how to perform or set some functions within your camera's user interface.

Obviously the perfect companion to the device when gifting. The book itself is well laid out and easy to reference. The quality of the writing is good and.... more importantly, technically accurate and simply laid out. Not all "Dummies" books are this well done.

Is a very simple and explicative book about all the sweeties you have obtained with you Olympus E-PL1 camera, I bought it from 175 bucks (body only) and I paired it with my old lens md minolta - my old X700 died

This is a very handy book if you want to get the most from your Pen E-PL 1 camera. I was amazed at all the hidden features. I bring this book out before shooting and concentrate on one thing at a time to get the best from the camera. It has made all the difference in getting more subtle shots. We can all use editing software, but this book has taken my shots to the next level. Probably not the book for point and shoot photographers. That's the best thing about this camera. It can really be an ameture camera as well as intrigue the professional looking for a compact camera. This book takes the camera out of the point and shoot mode.

I finally transitioned to digital cameras after 40 years using film cameras. This camera was my first step up from a point-and-shoot and this book is very helpful. The book has lots of basic information about both this camera and digital photography in general. Since I'm transitioning this was quite nice. There is also plenty of information about the E-PL1 itself that either is not in the manual or else I have not been able to find it. I was easily able to tweak many camera settings to tailor the use of the camera to me. Prior to having the book there were a number of minor frustrations with using the camera. The information in the book addressed them all. I'm able to use the camera more effectively and I understand the way the controls work.

Having moved up from a point-and-shoot to an Olympus EPM-1 (PEN Mini) I was bewildered by the various menus and settings, and did not find the manual that came with the camera was much help.Although this title is for the PEN E-PL1, I found that in almost cases the same settings and usage applies to the EPM-1. It shows how to access and use features in the hidden depths of the settings. Thanks to the clear explanations and illustrations I now have a thorough working knowledge of my camera and am able to get out of the "AUTO" setting.Really very pleased indeed with this book.

I bought this as a supplement to the mannual. While I vowed never to own a book for Dummies I did make an acception and am glad I did.I bought the Olympus camera to enable me to manually control the aperature and shutter speed for capturing higher qualitly photos of my art work. Before I had the book I spent five hours shooting my work and was still not very pleased with the results. The book helped me learn more about special options on the camera and with these options I was able to very quickly resolve the issues I had been having and get exceptional photo's of my art work. For me it was a matter of over riding the image stabelizer feature. Something that didn't occur to me, even though I was using a tripod. This made all the difference and was information I would never have gleaned from the manual.So yeah, I now own a book for Dummies and I am pleased.

This is a great introduction to the E-PL1. It goes over the basic features of the camera and then guides you to the more advanced features while providing some good background information into the fundamentals of photography. I would have liked more example photos for various scenarios - but overall there is a good deal of visual and textual information here and I would recommend this for anyone who has the E-PL1.

i've never had a 'fancy' camera before (one that you can change the shutter speed, swap lenses, etc). so this book has been very helpful for me to understand. i am about half-way through the book, so i cannot state that it has everything i need - but so far i am not disappointed. i'm looking into purchasing other filters - which is not in this book. - but i think it is because the camera does not come with them. (plus the ones i am looking at are not olympus-brand)from what i see so far, expect this book to teach about what comes with the camera (the 14-42mm lens, regular flash). all the extra features (flashes, lenses, adapters) you might need to learn more from the olympus website. but i will do that when the time comes - i need this book to learn how to work up to another/better lens/etc first.recommended.

This is a "SIMPLY" wonderful book to have for the already WONDERFUL Olympus Pen E- PL1 camera! It is very well written and very understandable to follow! I'm not a super technical person, so this book has been an enormous help to me.... I highly recommend the camera AND the book!

The menu system of the Olympus PEN E-PL1 is many layered, complex and confusing. The manual Olympus provides is not the greatest. A friend recommended this book to me and I ordered it in the Kindle version for reading on my PC. It is the first Kindle book that I've ever used on the computer. I don't have a Kindle. The content is very well written and helpful and I like the fact that I can use the search function in the Kindle PC software to find answers to specific questions. This book is excellent and I highly recommend it for people who have this camera.

Not much to say - these books are great for new or uninformed folks on a topic, product or service. This book does not deviate from that same idea. It's given me the basic and fundamental information about the camera that the manual didn't include. Does a great job at explaining things and includes pictures and all.. Great purchase!

this book was great for learning how to use my camera, but it's definitely not going to teach u how to get the shots u wanted. it's not a fotog book so they won't really go into detail as to what settings to get certain types of shots, but you can probably gather most of that info as u read + some internet googling. if ur really interested in learning photogrpahy, this book was still a great jumping off for a beginner like myself. it will bring up topics that u'll need to research more on ur own. everything is about PRACTICE so eventually it will come together if u want to dedicate the time and brainpower it deserves. but all in all, u can't learn photography without first knowing how to use the camera. or vice versa...?
