Roland's only solution to the Japanese bundled docs problem... buy directly from Roland USA.
I have no issue with the Roland VT-12 unit itself. I know that Amazon wants reviewers to stick to reviewing the product itself, but in this situation, the manufacturer support team's actions are a CORE PART of the problem people are having WITH the product bundle. Specifically, as of October 2025, the Amazon ad copy leads buyers to believe that the entirety of the product they are buying via Amazon will be useable to them by virtue of having support documentation and bundled materials in a language they can read and understand. This is NOT the case, and I believe that prospective buyers have a right to know how the manufacturer supports the product, or not, as in this case. Product and customer support are two sides of the same coin and buyers need awareness of both. THE GOOD I wanted to get a VT-12 because I understand that it is literally the only product of its type with lessons built-in to the unit which are keyed to the same lessons provided by a reputable music school and instructor in her book, "Vocal Workouts for the Contemporary Singer" by Anne Peckham, a renowned vocal instructor at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. Between the VT-12 and the linked lessons in the book, it's almost like having (a limited number of) vocal coaching sessions from the Berklee College of Music. I can find few faults in this approach. Yes, there are online apps available that can do something similar but are limited in scope unless one chooses to pay more for whatever level of instruction is offered or navigate your own way through multiple apps in search of a protocol that works for your needs. I do not have an exhaustive understanding of all offerings, but from the research I've done you CAN end up paying much more for these services than the cost of the VT-12. Those are the aspects of this product I find to be positive. However, the negatives cannot be overlooked or dismissed, as Roland seems to be currently doing. SKIPPING THE BAD AND GOING DIRECTLY TO THE UGLY. Before purchasing, I contacted Roland and inquired about the problem so many reviewers are having with user manuals and support documentation (the bundled Berklee Book and the Schirmer Library work, Concone 50 Lessons) being marketed and sold in the US in a foreign language WITHOUT notifying the buyers that this was going to be the case. All marketing materials SEEM to indicate that quite naturally, the bundled materials would be in English. They don't say that outright, but they also don't say that they are NOT in English. In fact, I've NEVER read an Amazon sales pitch that had to even mention this. It's just presumed, ENGLISH-based products on a US site. To be fair, the USER MANUALS can be downloaded in English from the Roland US site, that is not at all unusual. The issue is with the bundled books being provided in Japanese for mainly US buyers, meaning they will have to purchase these books for an additional cost, rendering the 'bundle' quite useless. Unfortunately, with this product, the ONLY way anyone would know that all materials are in Japanese would be to read the comments and the dates of occurrence, the latest being September of 2025. So, this has been going on with this product and Japan-based sellers on Amazon for over 10 years. In a nutshell, here's my main concern. There are two classes of deception or in this case deceptive trade practices. 'Lies of Commission' - actively making untrue statements -- and 'Lies of Omission' - making untrue statements by hiding the truth. Both are wrong, and in some situations illegal. Am I saying that what Roland is allowing to happen is illegal? No. In all probability, the MULTIPLE user reviews pointing this out that go back at least 10 years would stand legally as 'constructive notice' to buyers. So, let's just make it obvious... AS OF OCTOBER 2025, IF YOU BUY THE VT-12 FROM A JAPAN-BASED SELLER, YOUR USER MANUALS AND ABOUT $43 WORTH OF BUNDLED MATERIALS WILL BE IN JAPANESE. YOU CAN GET THE USER MANUALS AT THE ROLAND US SITE, BUT THE BUNDLED MATERIALS WILL LIKELY BE USELESS, RENDERING THE BUILT-IN TRAING ALSO USELESS UNLESS YOU BUY THE BOOKS SEPARATELY. If you have a problem with that, seek out a different seller, probably not on Amazon, or at minimum make sure the seller is not located in a foreign country. Since this has been an issue for 10 years and neither Roland nor Amazon has done anything about it, it is likely that even after Oct 2025, this will still be a problem. I raised this specific argument to Roland's support services prior to purchase, and the answer I received was a bit of a shock. I presumed I might hear something along the lines of, "send us proof of purchase and we'll make it right" or we'll deal with the dealer selling foreign product into the US without making that clear, after all our worldwide reputation is at stake". But the response I got was (paraphrasing), "We have sellers all over the world, so if you order from a foreign seller, you might get a product in their language. If you want these materials in English, buy directly from Roland US." OK, not what I expected from a company I very much respect for the excellent products they continue to produce, and from whom I have made many purchases (NEVER with this problem, by the way...). So, I think the answer stinks, but other than that I really don't have a problem with it. I'm sure that Roland has tens or thousands of distributors worldwide, and not all of them will be scrupulous in their business practices. The only part that bothers me is where Roland's answer ignores that people are being potentially deceived about their products by omitting the fact that bundled support materials from Amazon sites and Japanese sellers are almost certain to be in Japanese. Maybe that is something that only Amazon can deal with. In the meantime. If you buy from this source (you may be considering it due to pricing discounts... the price of this product has fluctuated in the last 30 days from $199 to $299 and is currently at $242) be prepared to shell out another ~$43 if you want the books in English that are keyed to the VT-12's built-in lessons. Highly recommended, by the way. I find it interesting that the price settled there, since at $242 you can still buy the books separately and be slightly under the full retail price. Or, do what Roland US suggests and either buy direct from them at the full retail or perhaps at your local music store where you can see in advance whether the entire package is useful to you. Regardless, after you get one, take the advice from the user manual and do your practice with headphones, the functionality of the speaker is naturally going to be weak, it's a half inch speaker... maybe in future iterations (assuming there are any) Roland will take a cue from cell phone manufacturers and use their speaker systems for full sound in a small package. We all know it can be done, Roland... everyone in the world carries around proof in their pocket. It's been true since the iPhone came out in 2007.

Product unusable to a non-Japanese speaker
Undisclosed in the advert this product's user manual is in Japanese making it unusable by a non-speaker. This hqas been reported to Amazon with no response, so perhaps the seller can correct this issue by providing or referring to an English user manual. Hope so. Looks like a good product.

Different from the US version
Smaller than the US version and came with instructions only in Japanese. Had to go to the Roland site and download the instructions in English. Not sure is this is a knockoff or really a Roland product. Works OK so far. I do like the fact that I can sing (as it was designed for) any note and it will show me what note I'm singing and even let me know if it's sharp or flat. I also use it for instruments such as flute and recorder, which have certain notes that are traditionally difficult to tune. There's a plethora of "alternate fingerings" out there (especially for the recorder). The VT-12 lets me know exactly which one does the best job for me.

This unit was helpful to me
I was a natural singer who for most of my life could just open my mouth and sing well. Now I am a older voice (68 at time of purchase, almost 71 now) who suffered a series of strokes six years ago that left me with a raspy, whispery voice that took a year and a half to sound "normal". Then I discovered that I had lost the ability to accurately sing notes, some would be strong and true but others sharp, flat or missed. I would try to sing a B and could only hit A or C. When performing I would not notice this, but others would and I could hear it on playback when I went to the studio. I got this vocal trainer on the recommendation of Sharri Gould, an East Coast voice coach at a worship leader's workshop. Working with the device has helped me reteach my brain so that I now can hit notes appropriately and the regular exercise has strengthened my tone and timber. I personally did not find the preprogramed vocal exercises helpful to me at first because my vocal cord control was not as supple or rapid enough to keep up. But the overall result of regular practice in running scales with the immediate visual feedback has been that I can sing all the songs I used to sing, lead worship and solo and people enjoy the result.

I really like my Roland VT-12 it has alot of vocal exercises ...
I really like my Roland VT-12 it has alot of vocal exercises and warm ups that are very helpful. I was a little disappointed that the users manual and vocal warmups were written in Japanese so I had to print out the English version from my computer .Overall I'm satisfied with my purchase.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
