James Horner's best score!
Krull is a really bad movie. It's got a plot and characters that are utterly forgettable, and the story isn't very compelling. The special effects are a bit strained, as well. But one thing that saved this piece of crap film from being a dull, dumb fantasy flick is James Horner's rip-roaring, spectacular score! I hated the movie Krull, but I kept sitting there in the theater cheering Colwyn on, because the music made me! It's a phenomenal score that has echoes of Eric Wolfgang Korngold's scores for Errol Flynn's action movies from the 40's. This was deliberate. Wheras the world was sort of in "Star Wars" mania, Krull was trying to tap into the swashbuckling fantasy film genre, and the tips of the hat to Korngold's music is exactly what the film needed for it's music. The two-CD set is the complete movie score. Previously, releases of the Krull soundtrack only had a few selections from the score, but this limited edition gives us the score in it's entirety. The booklet is also full of great background info on the film, Horner, and how the score was inspired and created. This soundtrack should be an essential part of any film score collection. It is to James Horner's work what Star Wars is to John Williams. This is James Horner's most iconic, and exciting scores.

James Horner's early work
For anyone over a 'certain' age, James Horner's work is defined by his Film Scores for "Star Trek" movies, and "Troy". However, his score for the Film "Krull" shows his style superbly, at its start. It is always fairly easy to identify Horner's work, as he invairiably uses a repeat of strident chords, early on, each time moving up a pitch. More often than not, with horns...very dramatic, very powerful - and why not, it what I say :o) Although this CD of the Krull score is very expensive [I think it works out at about £5 per track] it is well worth the money - James H allowed a large Orchestra and Chorus makes for a brilliant 'stand alone' CDThere is a much cheaper CD available, which I think was recorded in the 1990's, but that only has highlights. It certainly doesn't have the stonking opening credits sequence. For Horner afficiandos, save your pennies up and get the FULL Score, put on. sit back and wallow in its richness, and very varied tonal offerings. It is a pity the Film itself didn't really live up to James's Score - it's not a BAD Film, but perhaps too tweem and most definately 'toungue in cheek' even with Lysette Anthony!Jim Woodley

The music was better than the movie.
Krull was one of those odd films that came at the end of the Star Wars craze, and could even be described as 'Excalibur' meets 'Star Wars'. Sort of like a medieval fantasy set on a alien world. While I enjoyed the film, the music really stood out for me. This is clearly some James Horner's most energetic and imaginative work. It was a pleasure to be reacquainted with the soundtrack from this nearly forgotten movie.

The Growing Composer...
One of the best soundtracks from one of the best movie composers of the last 50 years - You can pick-up a lot of the musical themes and instrument transitions from the Star Trek II to the Star Trek III soundtracks and then on to the Aliens, Volunteers and Cocoon soundtracks, especially his trademark use of the whole note scale...

KRULL could possibly be James Horner's masterpiece.
Horner's KRULL score is an absolute work of art. The first score where he conducted the London Symphony. He was just 29.

Awesome 80’s Sword and Sorcery Soundtrack!
Awesome soundtrack in the best tradition of the sword and sorcery genre. Somewhat repetitive but enough variation to keep it interesting.

One of Horner's best early works, an absolute joy to listen to. This compilation has all the music missing on previous releases. Over 1 1/2 hrs of music. If you are a Horner or Krull fan this is a must have. Thanks James, RIP.
